Barrett Cattle & Mill Brae Ranch - Annual Bull Sale [3/22/24]

THE BARRETT CATTLE PROGRAM

To ensure fertility, all bulls must pass a complete BSE at 13- to 14-months of age, and then again prior to the sale by Dr. Adam Lukert of St. Mary’s Veterinary Services. We are confident in our genetics and have always retained ½ semen interest on every bull we sell. Buyers will take full possession and 100% salvage. Vaccination Program 2-month-old calves: Inforce 3, Ultrabac 7 3-month-old calves: Bovi-Shield Gold One Shot, Ultrabac 7, Dectomax Yearling Bulls: • Complete BSE • Synanthic 22.5% Oral Drench • Clean up II Pour-On • Vira Shield 6 + VL5 HB 18-month olds: • Complete BSE • Vira Shield 6 + VL5 HB • Dectomax Pour-On All bulls have been tested and are negative for p1 BVD.

Our Cowherd For decades, our selection has been, first and foremost, on maternal traits. We are extremely demanding of our cows and expect them to perform within our operation with no excuses: fertility (a 45-day calving window); mothering ability; udder quality, soundness of feet and legs, and disposition.

Since 2013, one year after the program’s inception, our cows have been enrolled in the American Angus Association’s Maternal Plus program. Every female culled from the herd is

submitted, along with the reason we culled her. Having the complete cow history at hand is an important piece

in our decision-making. Bull Development

The bulls are weaned at approximately 200 days of age, with no creep, and are dry-lotted for 2 to 3 weeks before being turned onto brome pasture. These 2 to 3 weeks would be the only time they are dry-lotted until sale week. Approximately May 1, they are hauled to native grass until the first part of October. At that time, they are brought closer to home and run on a fescue-mix pasture with a restricted supplementation mix of rolled corn and dried distiller’s grain, along with limited brome hay, usually starting in mid-December. There is no doubt we could achieve heavier weaning and yearling weights, but we have chosen to let the bulls develop and grow at a slower pace versus pushing them. Our personal experience is this will provide our customers with bulls that will last longer.
