The Visionary’s Map: A Guide To Unlocking Creativity, Innovation BY SUSAN ROBERTSON Despite the energy and effort you and your team pour into trying to in- novate, it often feels like there’s no real progress. When new challeng- es and opportunities arise, you aspire to chart a bold new course—yet, time and time again, you find yourself stuck relying on an outdated map. Perhaps your company has created brainstorming spaces, hired external creative talent, or made innovation a core value. But still, creativity stagnates, and innovation remains a buzzword instead of a breakthrough.
Kelly Spicers Acquires Creative Packaging Group Santa Fe Springs, California based Kelly Spicers, a West Coast distributor of paper, packaging, wide format products and facili- ties solutions, announced that it has acquired Denver based Creative Packaging Group, an independent packaging distributor with cus- tomers across the Rocky Mountain region. Creative Packaging specializes in supply- ing its customers with a high level of service and a broad range of industrial packaging consumables and equipment to support their market needs, from production line to final shipment. “As we continue to invest in the packaging business across Kelly Spicers, the acquisition of Creative Packaging fits well with our growth strategy, particularly for our multi-location customers,” said Jan Gottesman, President of Kelly Spicers. “We look forward to welcoming the Creative Packaging team to Kelly Spicers and expanding our presence in the Rocky Mountain region while enhancing our service platform across the West.” The company has been in operation since 2019 and serves a wide spectrum of custom- ers in the distribution, manufacturing, agricul-

Why does this happen? Because it’s not about the spaces or the speeches. These are surface-level solutions that only address symp- toms. The real obstacle is the way we think. It’s no one’s fault; it’s neuroscience. The Brain’s Built-In Barrier To Innovation Our brains are wired with a negativity bias—a subconscious focus on potential risks and problems before anything else. When confronted with a new idea, the knee-jerk reaction is “Yes, but…” followed by an avalanche of reasons why it won’t work. This instinctive reflex isn’t a flaw in your team, nor is it a lack of ambition or ability. It’s neuroscience at play. However, you can override this instinct and reframe how your team engages with new ideas. Imagine having a powerful navigational tool to guide you toward innovative solutions and to ensure your brain doesn’t automatically set CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

Turn Trim Waste into Revenue
One Size Never Fits All G.F. Puhl Designs Scrap Systems to Meet YOUR Needs Our customers have various needs for scrap and dust collection systems based on several factors including building layout, available space for the equipment, distance conveyed, local codes for noise and height as well as air permitting and available operating and maintenance staff. Change the game with a custom-designed system by G.F. Puhl. It can make all the difference. When it comes to trim collection systems, there’s virtually no problem we haven’t solved. Problem: No space for a baler room. No budget for baler room staff. Solution: Try outdoor auger compactors requiring minimal operator interaction. Auger compactors achieve higher compaction than conventional ram compactors with less maintenance and no hydraulic fluid. Dual compactor systems allow continuous running while the waste Solution: Request a custom system with remanufactured equipment. G.F. Puhl sells remanufactured balers, blowers, separators, filters, and more. The savings can be significant and the warranty adds peace of mind. Problem: No room for a scrap system inside the building. Solution: If your building footprint won’t support additional trim waste equipment, go outdoors. Exterior systems like an above-roof or ground-level concentrator will boost your capacity. Problem: Your existing system doesn’t meet codes and the inspector has notified you of a problem with the existing system. Solution: G.F. Puhl’s NFPA trained engineering team designs NFPA and OSHA compliant systems that are as safe as they are durable. Problem: Dust is out of control. Solution: G.F. Puhl systems are designed to minimize the hazards created by ambient dust. Dust briquetters, certified explosion isolation valves, flame front diverters, and other safety features maximize safety. Problem: No way to monitor the system unless you’re on site. Solution: G.F. Puhl leads the pack with proprietary technology that makes it possible to monitor the system from wherever you are. Request PLC touch screen controls with real-time pressure balancing and real-time remote via your smart phone or computer. G.F. Puhl’s expert engineering team has more than 50 years of combined experience designing, fabricating installing, and commissioning trim and dust collection systems of every kind, including outdoor systems with dual compactors, above roof systems with single or multiple cyclones and balers and below roof screen separator systems. Manufacturing PMI Grows In January After 26 Consecutive Months Economic activity in the manufacturing sector expanded in January after 26 consecutive months of contraction, say the nation’s supply executives in the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business. The report was issued earlier this month by Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the Institute for Supply Man- agement’s Manufacturing Business Survey Committee: “The Manufacturing PMI registered 50.9 percent in January, 1.7 percentage points higher compared to the seasonally adjusted 49.2 percent recorded in December. The overall economy continued in expansion for the 57th month after one month of contraction in April 2020. (A Man- ufacturing PMI above 42.3 percent, over a period of time, generally indicates an expansion of the overall economy.) higher than the seasonally adjusted 52.1 percent recorded in December. The January reading of the Production Index (52.5 percent) is 2.6 percentage points higher than Decem- ber’s seasonally adjusted figure of 49.9 percent. The index returned to expansion after eight months in contraction. The Prices Index continued in expansion (or increasing) ter- ritory, registering 54.9 percent, up 2.4 percentage points compared to the reading of 52.5 percent in December. The Backlog of Orders Index registered 44.9 percent, down 1 percentage point compared to the 45.9 percent recorded in December. The Employment Index registered 50.3 per- cent, up 4.9 percentage points from December's seasonally adjusted figure of 45.4 percent. “The Supplier Deliveries Index indicated marginally slower deliveries, registering 50.9 percent, 0.8 percentage point higher than the 50.1 percent recorded in December. (Supplier Deliveries is the only ISM Report On Business in- dex that is inversed; a reading of above 50 percent indi- cates slower deliveries, which is typical as the economy im- proves and customer demand increases.) The Inventories Index registered 45.9 percent, down 2.5 percentage points compared to December's seasonally adjusted reading of 48.4 percent. “The New Export Orders Index reading of 52.4 percent is 2.4 percentage points higher than the ‘unchanged’ reading of 50 percent registered in December. The Imports Index returned to expansion in January, registering 51.1 percent, 1.4 percentage points higher than December's reading of 49.7 percent.” “U.S. manufacturing activity expanded in January after 26 consecutive months of contraction. Demand clearly im- proved, while output expanded and inputs remained ac- commodative. Demand improvement includes: the (1) New Orders Index moving further into expansion territory, (2) New Export Orders Index moving back into expansion, (3) Backlog of Orders Index dropping slightly and continuing in contraction, and (4) Customers’ Inventories Index remaining in ‘too low’ territory. Output (measured by the Production and Employment indexes) was positive, as factory output improved compared to December, indicating that pan- elists’ companies are proceeding with growth plans. Em- ployment was stable as final head-count adjustments were made, in many cases among the white-collar workforces. Inputs—defined as supplier deliveries, inventories, prices and imports—generally continued to accommodate future demand growth, with inventories declining, but imports re- turning to expansion, prices increasing and supplier deliv- eries marginally slowing. “Demand and production improved; and employment expanded. However, staff reductions continued with many companies, but at weaker rates. Prices growth was moder- ate, indicating that further growth will put additional pres- sure on prices. As predicted, maintaining a slower rate of price increases as demand returns will be a major challenge

The Visionary’s Map (CONT’D FROM PAGE 1)
Now that the potential of the idea is clear, it’s time to address the challenges. However, rather than simply list- ing what’s wrong (the typical way we respond), instead, reframe each challenge as a problem-solving question, starting with phrases like “How to…?” • How to make this idea more affordable? • What are all the ways we might address this obstacle? • How might we modify this idea to make it faster? By shifting from statements of limitation (“This won’t work because…”) to questions of possibility, the conversa- tion stays solution-focused rather than dismissive. S = Solving (Adapt and Improve) Finally, identify the most pressing problem(s) and generate solutions. The idea isn’t static— it must evolve in order to be improved. Modify it, tweak it, or even let it simply inspire an entirely new concept — while retain- ing elements of what made it valuable. The key is to keep something from the Great list while adapting the idea to solve the challenges in the first draft. A Practical Example: Rethinking the Zoo Experience To see GPS in action, consider this thought experiment: imagine you’re part of a team designing new exhibits for a zoo. Someone suggests an idea called “Suddenly Bears!”— as you walk through the zoo, a bear suddenly appears, just mingling among the people. Rather than instantly dismissing this seemingly dan- gerous idea (as most teams might), applying GPS thinking CONTINUED ON PAGE 18
up roadblocks. The GPS (Great Problem Solving) system rewires subconscious, instant rejection into a deliberate process that uncovers hidden opportunities and drives creative thinking. The GPS System: A New Way To Navigate Creativity GPS is both a structured tool and a mindset that trans- forms how teams generate, evaluate, and refine ideas. In- stead of shutting down new thinking, it keeps the doors to innovation open. Here’s how it works: G = Great (Identify What’s Good) Any time an idea is proposed, start by identifying every- thing that could be great about it – before identifying the challenges. This is the part your brain will naturally skip, if you allow it, so you must make the conscious choice to turn off the “yes, but…” Remember that you WILL deal with the problems in a moment, but first we’re going to identify the possible good. Even if the idea is not fully formed, there are always elements that hold potential. The goal is to make a long and diverse list of those elements. Consid- er questions like: • What might be beneficial for the organization? • What might create value for customers? • What parts are particularly interesting? By beginning with possibility rather than problems, you set the stage for solutions rather than roadblocks. P = Problem (Articulate Challenges as Questions)
Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

would look like this: • G (Great): It’s surprising and exciting. It would create a memorable, shareable experience for visitors. It might increase engagement and ticket sales. It could provide new opportunities for education about bears. • P (Problem): Instead of saying, “That’s dangerous,” re- frame it: How might we safely create the surprise of suddenly encountering a bear? • S (Solving): Potential adaptations emerge: A virtual re- ality bear experience. Baby bear encounters. Visitors walk through a glass tunnel in the bear enclosure. A sa- fari-style ride through a bear habitat. The original idea may shift, but some great elements of it remain, leading to truly innovative solutions. Why GPS Works The way our brains naturally respond to new ideas—by first identifying the problems—shuts down unconventional ideas before they have a chance to develop. The GPS sys- tem ensures that great ideas aren’t dismissed prematurely. Here’s why it’s so effective: • Preserves Innovation: By starting with the potential, it prevents great ideas from being discarded too soon. • Promotes Practicality: It encourages refining ideas to make them possible. • Builds Collaboration: Every idea becomes a shared team effort, fostering buy-in and ownership.
• Encourages Psychological Safety: People feel more comfortable sharing unique ideas when they know the discussion will focus on building rather than breaking. Charting a New Course For Innovation Innovation isn’t about isolated genius or waiting for inspiration to strike—it’s about systematically creating an environment where new ideas can thrive. The GPS system provides a structured yet flexible approach to navigating challenges and unlocking creativity. By shifting from a reflexive “Yes, but…” to an intentional “How might we…?” you transform your team into a power- house of creative problem-solving. This treasure trove of creativity isn’t buried—it’s hidden in plain sight, just waiting CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

display systems which only show numerical values, Score- board 2.0 goes a step further by explaining when and why things are happening. “While others may be left trying to interpret issues, us- ers of Scoreboard 2.0 can immediately focus on solving them. “We also introduced our SyncMaster Wheel Upgrade this past year. The enhanced assemblies feature a much smaller wheel and housing assembly than earlier versions. “The new design addresses tight space constraints when mounting between idle rolls on modern high-speed splicers. The smaller wheel design also weighs signifi- cantly less, reducing the risk of roll wear at sensor contact points. The high durometer urethane-coated wheels are designed to last longer, therefore extending the time be- tween replacements. “In 2025, we will continue our dedication to the re- search and development of new products and solutions that help customers optimize efficiency, productivity, qual- ity, and safety. “In the coming months, watch for new products from CoparSolutions including one that uses the latest Machine Learning Technology (AI) to detect hazardous machine conditions before they escalate into life threatening fire incidents. “We will also be releasing a completely redesigned La- ser Warp Correction system in early 2025. The new design incorporates improved measurement methods which are not only easier to install but are also able to accommodate the tight spaces between stacker levels more easily. In- vestment costs are reduced thanks to the simpler design and time required to mount the sensors. “The new design not only compensates for any warp measured at the end of the stacker belts but also incorpo- rates Machine Learning (AI) algorithms to update our reci- pes and override operator errors. “CoparElectric, our installation services division, will in- troduce additional maintenance and facility support in the coming months which will complement the electrical and mechanical services already offered. “CoparElectric specializes in installation, upgrade, and maintenance services for full corrugator lines, drives, pre- heaters, splicers, singlefacers, glue units, dry end equip- ment, and lighting upgrades. “Services are not limited solely to our equipment. In fact, they are often selected by OEMs as their contractor of choice for new installations and machine upgrades. “CoparElectric also works directly with plants for a wide variety of electrical and mechanical projects, lighting up- grades, and complex facility maintenance. “We would like to thank all our customers and industry partners that who contributed to a very successful 2024. We look forward to continuing partnerships and friend- ships in the coming year. We wish everyone a safe, joyful and prosperous 2025.” For more information, visit coparsolutions.com .
COPARSOLUTIONS Burbank, Illinois: Jim Burrows reports, “Demand for our products continues to grow, greatly driven by the growing appetite to automate corrugator and converting processes.
“The desire, if not need, to mini- mize operator intervention is a driv- ing force behind our research and development of new products, as well as the further development of exiting products. “In its simplest form corrugated is just a few pieces of paper held

together with a little starch. Manufacturing a corrugated sheet, however, involves many individual processes which are dependent on one another. “Ideally, adjustments to these processes should be synchronized to ensure consistency when the machine changes speed or when moisture varies from roll to roll. “It’s impractical for operators to make adjustments each time production speed changes, even for a multi-person crew. Manual adjustment becomes a lagging process of making a change, then waiting for the material to travel through the machine to measure the result. “Obviously, this can lead to a significant amount of wasted time and material. “Total Corrugator Control (TCC) integrates our Sync- Master synchronized splice control, QualityMaster closed- loop process control, Laser Warp Correction continual warp management, and Thermal Imaging Cameras into an autonomous system which removes the need for human intervention. “Total Corrugator Control continually monitors produc- tion, not only watching for deviations from the system’s process set points but also by measuring the finished product coming off the machine. “When an issue is recognized, TCC quickly modifies the setpoints, then re-evaluates the situation. In many cas- es, TCC will resolve the issues before the operator knows there is a problem. “At SuperCorrExpo 2024, we were happy to welcome many CoparSolutions’ customers to our booth where they learned about our new products and latest innovations. “In addition to TCC, we introduced our upgraded pro- duction display system, Scoreboard 2.0. While the large dual-sided 75” HD screens are impressive, we will soon be releasing a much larger 98” version which will feature additional bells and whistles to keep operators informed. “Both options are housed in a sleek enclosure with a hooded visor that helps reduce dust accumulation on the screens and minimizes glare from overhead lighting. Addi- tionally, the new enclosure neatly organizes and conceals the power and video cables for a clean, streamlined look. “Scoreboard 2.0 displays critical production data, en- suring employees stay informed in real-time.
