STAVICK SIMMENTAL
KING OF THE RANGE PRODUCTION SALE THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2026 • 1 P.M. STAVICK SIMMENTAL RANCH • VEBLEN, SD
Welcome to our 26th Annual King of the Range Production Sale! Commercial cattlemen’s source for functional, honest, and problem-free cattle.
more loafing space while maintaining our three feet of bunk space per bull. We believe spreading bulls out helps reduce the risk of injury due to extreme riding. We develop these bulls on a single ration from weaning until sale day—never changing. The ration is forage-based, consisting of haylage, silage, alfalfa hay, prairie hay, and corn. We target a 3.25 lb ADG. Some will do better, some a bit lower, giving you the opportunity to find both big spread bulls and maternally bred bulls without compromise. My biggest passion today is the developmental stage of bulls. There isn’t a day that goes by that we aren’t trying to create a better environ- ment for our weaned calves to excel. It’s a huge investment, but I feel it’s one of the ways we add value to your purchases—knowing these bulls are cared for and developed correctly. I touched a little on labor earlier—this is a family-driven ranch. Every task here is done primarily by Owen or myself. Daily feeding, bedding, calving, sire selection, and all individual cow matings are handled by us. Turnout and AI are done entirely be Liv, Owen, and me, as well as the countless jobs in between like giving shots and processing calves. All clipping is done by Owen, and the pictures are a family affair with Liv leading. Liv also handles our advertising and promotions. We each have our areas of expertise, and when help is needed, we’re not too proud to call on each other first. We are all driven by the same core beliefs, and I can proudly say that most decisions are very uniform— no matter which one of us is making them. Lastly, we’ve decided to try to help the young producer—if you’re un- der 30, your purchase will receive a 5% discount; the future of this in- dustry depends on people willing to build something long-term and we know firsthand how difficult it is to get momentum started. Thanks for taking the time to look through our program. If you have any questions, give any of us a call. Mike, Myra, Owen and Liv
This year’s cattle market feels like we’re in the driver’s seat going 120 MPH—adrenaline running, thrilled to be part of it—while at the same time glancing down to make sure we’re buckled up and hoping the tires are good. Are we going to run out of gas? Crash? Airbags go off? I honest- ly don’t know. But if you’ve spoken to me, you know I’ve never been more optimistic about this market. It’s tough not to be optimistic about the future of our industry, while still having enough experience to understand that markets never stay the same. I’ll be the first to tell you I’m not an econ major—my wife and banker would agree. However, we have the lowest cowherd numbers on record. Pasture has been broken for farmland and will never be reseeded to grass. Our consumers value high-quality beef. Our producers continue to age, with few young people entering the cow-calf sector. Even if every heifer born last year were kept, we still would not maintain the numbers we have today. And we all know with the price of calves today, most heif- ers are sold to go on feed. So, with all that being said—what’s next? For us at Stavick Simmental, we’re not changing things. We will keep the same number of heifers to maintain our herd and add a few so we can continue to cull from the bottom. We will continue to live by our core values: every cow on the place should be able to put a bull in the sale or leave an improved daughter in her place. They will be problem-free, func- tional cattle with as much performance as our environment will maintain, with no added luxuries of creep feed or extra labor. Our cows will continue to give birth to thrifty calves, nurse with prob- lem-free udders, and maintain great dispositions. Their feet and legs are structured to allow them to graze big pastures in rough country, where we can analyze and cull poor producers or problem cattle. Remember— cows that stay pay. Our bull calves will continue to be developed using sound manage- ment and feeding techniques. We will never compromise structure or proper scrotal development while chasing huge ADG. This year, you’ll notice we’ve added a third development pen. This was done to create

INSURANCE: Livestock mortality insurance forms will be available on Sale Day. Bulls become the buyer’s property at the time of sale. We strongly recommend insuring bulls left at the ranch, especially those valued at $10,000 or more. If something unfortunate occurs before the bull is in your care, we will cover the cost of the insurance premium. New owners may use their own provider or contact Jeff Thomas at 406-581-8859 or jeffthomas138@gmail. com. GUARANTEE: We guarantee all bulls to be breeders and reserve the right to test any bull in question as a non-breeder for a reasonable amount of time before making an adjustment. And, if the bull is declared a sound breeder by a competent veterinarian, he will be returned to the buyer. In case an adjustment is required, it will be made with a replacement of equal value to animal in question or credit on purchase of another single animal. Credit must be used on following bull sale. Guarantee is not an insurance or mortality policy but a guarantee on functional fertility. The buyer assumes all risks for injuries due to running bulls together and management decisions out of genetic control. DELIVERY: We will keep bulls until March 20 and deliver bull purchased in the Dakotas to your farm or a centralized drop-off when available. With the price of fuel and time, it really helps if we can meet several customers at an agreed upon location. We also do our best to deliver and assist out-of-state buyers in coordinating loads and making the most economical trucking arrangements possible. For delivery or trucking questions, contact Mike or Owen. STAVICK SIMMENTAL WILL BE RETAINING 1/3 SEMEN INTEREST IN ALL BULLS. BUYER WILL HAVE FULL POSSESSION AND SALVAGE VALUE.
DOCILITY SCORES: We have been around these bulls a lot and we represent them as best we can. Of course, there are always exceptions or situations that cause a bull to become restless or nervous, but we do our best to identify any individuals and have culled aggressively. If docility is your number 1 criteria, please contact us to confirm or help guide you. 1-Very calm, not nervous. 2-Calm for the most part, stands when walking by but will walk away when you pressure him. 3-Calm when in the group, may become nervous when pressured by himself or when isolated. We recommend these bulls to operations running many bulls and cows as they tend to blend in the best and are comfortable in a group. HERD HEALTH: Bulls were scrotal measured and had final weight taken by Dr. Holly Roe-Johnson, DVM, Hosmer Vet Clinic on 1/7/26. Bulls will be semen checked and given two rounds of footrot vaccine prior to delivery. All cattle are on a modified live vaccine regiment along with Mycoplasma throughout the year. We have been actively testing for Johnes and BVD for 20 years. TERMS & CONDITIONS: Cash or check day of sale with proper ID. Payment for bulls purchased via DVAuction must be made in full within 7 days of sale or finance charges will apply. Bulls become the property and therefore risk of the purchaser after it is sold. We guarantee the animal to be healthy and will have been inspected by Dr. Holly Roe-Johnson, DVM and Dr. Nate Iliff, DVM prior to the sale. Any death or injury after the animal is sold is at the buyer’s expense. All animals will be sold in accordance with the suggested guidelines of the American Simmental Association. Any information announced sale day takes precedence over the sale catalog.

Quick Reference to ASA EPD and $ Indexes
Expected Progeny Differences (EPD): EPD are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPD, the difference between two sires’ EPD represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPD of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPD is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPD, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPD rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPD and $ indexes visit www. simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPD are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK) : Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.
Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.
$ Indexes: Though EPD allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through wellconceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPD and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPD, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.

Genomically Enhanced EPDs
Genomically Enhanced Expected Progeny Differences (GE-EPD) are a game-changer for commercial, seedstock, and all beef producers in between.
The difference between GE-EPD and standard EPD is mostly seen in the form of increased prediction accuracy. Animals that have GE-EPD have significantly improved accuracy for all EPDs as young animals. The way this improvement in prediction accuracy can be measured is by reflecting any improvement in a progeny equivalent. A progeny equivalent is the amount of progeny an animal would have to have born, measured for a trait, and reported to the ASA to receive the same increase in accuracy from a genomic panel. In the case of most of the growth traits, it would take ~25 progeny before a non-genotyped animal would receive the same prediction accuracy as a genotyped animal.
The following tables illustrate approximate progeny equivalents for various traits after a genomic test.

Consequences of Overconditioning Beef Bulls Pedro Fontes, Assistant Professor Animal and Dairy Science University of Georgia (Published in Progressive Cattle)
Feeding high-energy diets to young bulls right up to the point of breeding season can have a negative effect on breeding ability, semen quality and embryo development. Sire overconditioning is a prevalent issue in the beef industry. Because pre- and post-weaning growth are important in the cattle business, we often place considerable emphasis on identifying bulls with superior genetics for weaning and yearling weights. To help us identify these superior bulls, high-energy diets are often utilized to allow young bulls to express their genetic potential. Nevertheless, bulls are often
reserves to handle a busy breeding season while minimizing the risk of reduced fertility associated with overconditioning. Additionally, it is important to keep in mind that bulls can lose over 100 pounds during the breeding season. Adapting young bulls that were developed in a predominantly concentrated diet to a forage-based diet before turning them out to breed cows can help mitigate these losses and optimize bull performance during the breeding season.
not only fed high-energy diets to express their genetic potential at the time of yearling weight collection, but also until the time of sale, resulting in overconditioned bulls. While “fat sells” when it comes to selling bulls, research has shown that excessive conditioning can negatively affect semen quality. An observational study evaluating over 1,600 breeding soundness exam records revealed that only 45% of extremely overconditioned bulls (with a body condition score [BCS] of at least 4 on a scale of 1 to 5) passed the breeding soundness exam, compared to 81% of bulls with an adequate BCS of 3. Moreover, when an experimentally controlled study compared the impact of feeding young bulls a moderate-gain diet primarily based on forage (control) to a high-energy diet comprising 80% concentrate and 20% forage (high- gain) for approximately 160 days, similar results were observed. Bulls fed the high-gain diet were heavier and had greater backfat thickness. However, they exhibited a greater percentage of secondary sperm defects and reduced sperm motility compared with the control bulls. Additionally, high-gain bulls had greater scrotal circumference and suboptimal regulation of scrotum surface temperature, which may be linked to increased fat deposition in the neck region of the scrotum, potentially explaining the decrease in semen quality. In summary, while high-energy diets should be used to enable young bulls to express their genetic potential for post-weaning growth, it’s crucial to avoid overfeeding them to an extent that fertility is compromised. This can be accomplished by closely evaluating body condition scores while developing bulls. Bulls should be managed to have a body condition score of 6 on a 1-to-9 scale before the beginning of the breeding season. This ensures they have sufficient energy
What the professionals have to say “I visited Stavick Simmental on 1/7/26 to scrotal measure bulls and was very impressed with what I saw. The bulls are developed on a simple, back-to-basics ration and allowed to grow naturally. They are in excellent condition—sound, athletic, and well-muscled without being over-conditioned. Scrotal measurements were strong, ranging from 32 cm to 40.5 cm, with minimal fat and very good testicular quality. The Stavicks also maintain one of the most aggressive Johne’s control programs I have seen. They are willing to cull deeply and decisively, prioritizing herd health above all else. Stavick cattle work because the Stavicks work. Any animal that doesn’t meet expectations—structurally, functionally, or from a health standpoint—is removed. Mike has always been extremely detail-oriented and uncompromising when it comes to conformation and quality. He knows exactly what he wants and is always focused on the future of the herd. As their veterinarian, it’s a pleasure to work with cattlemen at this level. As a bull buyer, you can purchase with confidence. Owen and Liv carry on that same commitment to quality—though Mike may still think he has the upper hand."
– Holly Roe-Johnson, DVM
“While each individual seedstock operation defines their own goals for bull development, it is a process that takes years to refine. Stavick Simmental judiciously looks back each year to refine their process. They are very specific that bulls should be developed in a manner that maximizes their fertility and provide higher reliability of their durability. This year’s bulls have been the lowest input group of bulls assembled to date. Even with that, they have posted some impressive average daily gains and shown their genetic potential for growth. While we all know that anything can happen with these animals, they have been developed to be ready to work for their new owners!”

• A great way to lead off the Outlaw group—and a strong candidate to start the sale. This stud has been impressive from day one, combining tremendous growth and performance with elite cow power. He’s out of the up-and-coming Cowboy Logic 2090K, now proving herself in a big way with only her second calf. She absolutely hit it out of the park here. With an actual weaning weight of 866 pounds, this bull will take a back seat to no one. • His perfect strip face grabs your attention immediately, but it’s the massive length of spine and flawless blend from front to back that keep you studying him. He’s so fluid and correct in his design that it’s hard to find a hole—just a real-world, performance-built bull with presence. Lot 1
• The maternal strength behind Lot 1 is hard to overstate. If Leonardo da Vinci himself were painting cows, he couldn’t improve on 2090K or her dam, E118. Both are incredibly feminine through their front ends and boast two of the top five udders on the ranch. Granddam E118 has already proven her worth with another standout son in the sale, Lot 22, and she’s also the granddam of Lot 29—
further stacking the genetic consistency and value behind this bull. • We believe this is a true herd sire and a legitimate statement piece—one that can add value to both seedstock and commercial programs alike. And yes, 100K
high-density genomics and parent verification are already complete.

We understand pounds pay the bills, and he represents the next step in our program. • He traces back to one of our proven cow families, blending WS Certified and STAV King of Clubs. • When you look at his numbers, he ranks in the top 5% of registered animals for WW and YWT, with $GN in the top 2%. At the same time, his maternal numbers are strong—top 45% for MCE and top 25% for Milk, MWW, and STAY. He’s a true unicorn, and judging by his first bull calves, he’s poised for serious use this spring. • Outlaw has far exceeded our expectations and looks to make the same kind of lasting impact on our program as sires like STAV King of Clubs, STAV Bullflex, and STAV Hitchpin. • Birth weights run 90–105 lbs. and frame scores are 6–7.

Just because there isn’t a picture doesn’t mean he’s any less of an animal—please keep that in mind as you sort through the catalog. Be sure to watch the videos on DV Auction, and as always, we’re more than happy to walk bulls with you and do our best to point you in the right direction for your program. • Lot 4 is a big-time growth standout with added frame and length that would make him a valuable asset to an Angus cowherd looking to stretch out and take advantage of heterosis. We do it that way on purpose—if a bull is truly a breeding piece, he should make consistent calves across a wide range of cows. Boy, did Outlaw do exactly that. • Lot 5 is a prime example. He’s out of a Pipeline female, and once again, it resulted in a top-end bull. If you’re looking for performance and functional maternal females, this pedigree checks the box. • Swagger is the word that comes to mind with this guy. He carries all the performance of his brothers with a little less birth weight. This bull is loaded with growth yet maintains his structural integrity—smooth on the move with great shape and quality to his feet.

“We keep coming back to Stavick Simmental because the cattle simply do what they’re supposed to do. Their bulls are docile and easy to work with, and they hold condition without issues. Calves are up and sucking within minutes, with the kind of vigor you want to see. We background our own calves until April, and year after year they gain well—and we haven’t had a sale yet where the auctioneer hasn’t bragged on how they look. It’s fun hearing the oohs and aahs when they step into the ring. We’ve kept replacement heifers, and the genetics have noticeably improved our program and production over the last few years. Just as important, when you buy a bull from the Stavicks, you’re not just a customer—you’re family. Whether it’s swapping Snapchats of cattle or knowing they use the same bulls they sell us, the support doesn’t end on sale day. You get a quality bull and the confidence that someone stands behind him.” – Ryan and Beth Westphal, Canby, MN

With many already in our replacement pen and 40 more coming next year, his influence will be hard to ignore. • With below-average birth weights out of cows and extreme growth, the eight sons he has on this sale are a group every serious breeder should evaluate. • Birth weights run 75-95 lbs. and frame scores are 5.8–6.8.

He started with a 76-pound birth weight and weaned at an actual 810 pounds on 9/01, making him a big-spread bull with plenty of performance. • This bull could be considered a heifer bull—his genomic-enhanced EPDs and an easy-calving Principal dam make a solid combination. That said, if you’re a commercial producer, proceed with a little caution; he’s probably not a “sleep- all-night, no-check” heifer bull. With his combination of look, performance, and pedigree, he’s guaranteed to be a favorite on sale day. • Lot 10 is hetero black, and truth be told, being born a male kind of messed up my plan—I was really hoping for a heifer to carry on his dam’s legacy. She’s a 2013-born female who gave us 11 natural calves on a 366-day calving interval and has sold six bulls over the years at our sale. Even as her final calf, he still weaned over 800 pounds. She was a problem-free, no-touch cow who quietly went about producing sale toppers and great females. • In our eyes, he’s a picture-perfect stud: a reverse-wedge shape, masculine, big- footed, and easy to handle. He’s already earning a spot among the best of her sons, with prominent producers like Mike Gage, Nevin Sorenson, and Jordan Wyum having purchased his siblings. • If you’re looking for a bull that combines performance, phenotype, and proven maternal power, Lot 10 fits the bill.

• This Latigo calf was actually on my list to keep as a herd sire. With his sound conformation, easy-going attitude, and being a direct son of one of my favorite cows, F857, he’s the kind of bull that makes you think twice about selling. She came in open this fall, and I said, “If this bull tests homo polled, he’s not going anywhere.” Sure enough—he is homo polled. The only problem? We have so many heifers in the keep pen out of Latigo’s first calf crop that it’s tough to figure out how to use him properly. Long story short, this is your chance to buy a breeding bull of the highest quality before I change my mind! • Lot 11 is relaxed, easy-going, super clean-jointed, and fluid in his movement, standing on big feet. He’s a true athlete and feel he is one of the best we’ve ever offered. He’s 100K tested with parent verification to both dam and sire completed—ready and looking for work. • On the maternal side, he’s out of a no-hole cow with a top-five udder purchased from the Kappes dispersal. Any cow that puts three replacements in our herd and produces two top-end bulls earns high praise. Her only other son was sold to Peter Frank, an astute cattleman and feeder. Big-time predictability makes him a top son of TERS Latigo.

Last spring we had our first set of calves, and we didn’t have to pull, nurse, or touch a single one. The calves came easy, got up quickly, and have grown really well. Lot 16 • The number one weaning weight bull of the 2025 calf crop at 968 pounds— setting a new ranch record and beating STAV Grandstand by 2 pounds! He started at just 93 pounds, so this massive growth truly highlights his genetic potential. His ADG hasn’t slowed since weaning, and he achieved all of this without creep feed, raised entirely on native grass and milk from a superbly uddered young TJ Crossfit cow. Just her second calf, she’s already setting records, and with a pedigree tying Crossfit and LFE Riddler, the growth and maternal traits are all there in spades.
• For a bull with this kind of performance, he’s also fluid in movement, big middled, masculine, and easy to handle—calm with no spook. He resembles his maternal grandsire, Mega Wide, so closely you’d almost swear he came out of him. Rugged performance meets refined structure and an outcross pedigree—44N truly stands in a league of his own. • Top 1% in the breed for WW, YW, ADG, MWW, and CW; top 10% or better for $GN, MCE, and TI.
