conference education only. PVP-I or betadine is a potent microbicidal agent with several advantages over other iodine solutions. The 10% PVP-I solution contains 90% water, 8.5% polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and only 1% iodide. PVP delivers free iodine directly to the bacterial cell surface. Iodine targets are located in the bacterial cytoplasm and cytoplasmic membrane, and its cidal action takes place in a matter of seconds. Positive outcomes have been demon- strated for PVP-I in controlling the incidence of new carious lesions for children at risk of developing extensive caries. One time treatment with Povidone Iodine effectively re - duced the microbial counts for up to 3 months. Attendees will learn how to understand at-home options for at-risk patients to improve/ maintain oral health between visits. Who povidone iodine is indicated for, and confident - ly conduct a caries risk assessment and discuss different treatment options for patients who are moderate to high-caries risk.
