GENERAL PRINCIPLES

– Understand the heritage significance of your property. Aim to retain significant buildings and features (see pages 14 to 16) – Understand the regulations that apply to the proposed works. These may include planning controls, the Heritage Act and the Building Code of Australia (see pages 8 to 9) – Position new additions or alterations in areas that are less visible and have less significant features. Avoid changes to areas of the property that are seen from the street – Design new additions to respect the heritage building and landscape. For example, maintain the prominence of the heritage building by moderating height/bulk of new structures and retain and repair key features of the heritage building and landscape – Make a distinction between existing and new fabric. While restoration work should use traditional techniques and materials, a new building wing should represent a high quality, contemporary design.
