A journey of new beginnings and support for Alex

Like many people, Alex was unsure about a referral to the hospice. He thought that hospice care meant being admitted to the Ayrshire Hospice at the end of life.
However, after meeting with one of the NHS Improving the Cancer Journey practitioners, a self-referral was completed for the Living Well Service. Alex then came to meet me at the hospice to discuss what the service is all about and the classes and therapies available. Following those initial conversations, Alex has attended a sound bath, physiotherapy clinic, complementary therapy clinic and the monthly social gathering. Alex said that if someone had told him a year ago to go to a sound bath, he would have laughed. However, over the last year, he has decided to try new things and see for himself whether they help with his wellbeing. After a reflexology session, Alex reported that he felt relaxed and his body felt “lighter”. More recently, Alex had further surgery and said: “My experience at the hospice in the lead-up was great and helped me no end, with physio, reflexology, mindfulness and relaxation all feeding into preparing for the op and helping with recovery.” The Living Well Service aims to empower people to live well with their illness, acknowledging that wellbeing has many strands.
