Caring for children at College camp
T hirty-five College boys have stepped up to help change lives, getting involved in a special camp for children with disabilities. The boys – from Years 11–13 – were there to provide 24/7 care for 12 Canterbury children over three days, with all eager to volunteer for the 2023 Sony Camp held at Christ’s College. While a wonderful experience for the young campers, it also meant that their carers could enjoy a well- deserved break. All the student helpers – including a group from
St Margaret’s College – went through weeks of training in the lead-up to the camp. Based in Richards House, the live-in camp included creative activities, a bouncy castle and pony cycles, face painting, games, a visit from a fire truck, swimming, a superhero-themed disco, a trip on the tram, a treasure hunt in the Botanic Gardens, and a farewell lunch for campers and their families, and school students and staff in the Dining Hall.
