A long-serving member of the College community, Ian joined the school in 2001 as a teacher of Mathematics, having gained a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Physics from the University of Canterbury and then taught at Lincoln High School, Wellington College, and Christchurch Boys’ High School. During his time at College, he was also appointed Master-in-Charge of Basketball and Volleyball, again supporting two highly successful sports at the school. Now looking back on his 20- plus years at College, Ian says “good traditions have been well maintained but there is now a greater emphasis on pastoral care, wellbeing, and effort ahead of outcome”. He has also welcomed today’s focus on “greater accountability”, acknowledging that “the standards (bar) for boys is much higher now”. While Ian has enjoyed helping many boys to achieve their potential – both in the classroom and the House – he is taking those many lessons of College life into the new setting of performance coaching next year.
“I have left teaching to move into a new career focusing on performance and life coaching and mentoring,” he explains. “I do one-on-one coaching and individual online sessions with young professionals who need a wise head and a helping hand to help guide them in a new or better direction. I also work with individuals and groups in the leadership and teamwork consultancy space.” For Ian, it has been a natural progression from his House leadership and mentoring positions with Christ’s College. “While I miss the contact with the boys, the laughs, the
