Along with wife and fellow teacher Taryn, Lionel also taught at Hilton College, a school on a nature reserve surrounded by zebra, giraffe, and wildebeest, and undertook further university studies, highlighting his interest in sports science. He holds a Diploma in Sports Management Coaching, along with a Bachelor of Science. In 2018, Lionel – along with his growing family – moved to New Zealand, coaching water polo in Tauranga and then teaching at Auckland Grammar School. During his time at College, Lionel has also taught Woodwork, Health, and the MINDfit programme, along with coaching water polo and managing rugby
“I will miss our many morning whole-House runs, where we seek out and ‘find the beauty’ in each day; and the times when the entire House has crammed into a classroom to support our interhouse chess matches. “The memory of every man in the House running the cross country, and the importance of showing up and honouring commitments – and especially those efforts resulting in an overall House Cup victory by just one point – will remain a highlight for me. “Receiving messages from parents sharing their pride in their sons’ achievements, and seeing the twinkle in a boy’s eye when he gained selection into a team, a leadership position, or was awarded for his academic, service, outreach, cultural, music, or sports accomplishments have been truly fulfilling moments. Equally, experiencing all the support and care when things didn’t go according to plan and we
all worked together as a team to help the boys bounce back. Thank you, boys, for making my tenure here so remarkable and for filling my life with pride. I am confident you will continue to be amazing. “Being a Housemaster is one of the best jobs in the world and to have enjoyed the privilege of doing so in such a wonderful place has been special. “Just like we encourage our boys to dream big, aim high, spread their wings and fly far, and lean on the values and spirit of community that we learn at College, I have been inspired to do the same. So I am excited to take the best of my experiences along with me and to continue on my educational journey in Australia. “Both College and Scotch Oakburn are Round Square schools, so I believe, in my new role, we also have a unique opportunity to collaborate and broaden our horizons together.”
