Vale Karen Adams A lways at home in Flower’s House, Karen Adams was at the heart of the Christ’s College boarding community – as both a mother and a matron. Inspired by the wonderful memories of her sons during their own time in Flower’s House, Karen wanted to give back to the College community where her two boys had thrived and applied for the role of matron in 2009. Sadly, she passed away in October this year, having helped to steer so many young men along their best path. For more than 15 years – no matter the need – Karen was always there, standing at the entrance, ready to greet each boy. A welcoming smile, a firm but friendly voice, she was happy to listen, act when necessary, or find the right way to support and nurture thousands of College boarders, along with becoming a special figure in the lives of many international students. Often far away from their own families, any boy could always turn to Karen for comfort and care. She was the calming figure among the noise, energy, and antics. From 6am, Karen was ready for each day – checking on the boys, rounding up students, and ensuring that they had everything they needed to navigate another busy schedule before joining everyone for breakfast in the Dining Hall. Available throughout the school hours too, Karen believed in an ‘open door’ approach and putting the boys first – no matter the time or day.
She was introduced to Flower’s House in 1999 when her son, Andrew, was awarded a scholarship to attend College in his final two years of schooling. Her other son, Richard, followed, stepping into the House in 2001. In 2016, Karen recalled that both sons had many happy memories of their time at College and she had been impressed by their growing confidence. While teaching ESOL at a primary school, Karen noticed a College advertisement seeking a new boarding House matron. Eager to play a positive role in College life, she applied, believing she could care for other people’s children as much as her boys had been so well supported.
Reflecting on her role, Karen had said: “I love what I do here – it feels like family. It’s so rewarding to see the boys come in and go through, and see them grow up and reach their potential. It’s pretty special, especially when they come back and visit.” She also knew that it could be hard to hand your child over to someone else’s care but believed that boys could “learn and grow so much” at College while relishing their opportunity to “take part in an extraordinary range of activities”. As 2024 Head of Boarding – and a Flower’s House leader – Franklin Barry explains, “Karen was a huge part of every Flower’s House boy's journey through College”.
