Love of learning A day in the life of a College boarder
A s light floods the dormitory, the gentle – but firm – voice of House Matron Karen Adams wakes boys from their deep teenage slumber, signalling the start of another activity-packed day for Flower’s House boarder James Reed. Still drowsy from the previous busy school day, James joins the line for the showers before quickly donning the uniform for the day, adjusting his tie, polishing his shoes, and heading across the road to the College Dining Hall for a healthy breakfast to set himself up
for classes, sport, choir, and a school production rehearsal in the evening. After catching up with fellow boarders and grabbing a sausage roll or piece of cake for morning tea, James heads back to his House to empty rubbish bins and gather up laundry before brushing his teeth in preparation for a full school programme. By the first class of the day, James is ready for the myriad challenges of juggling learning, rowing, singing, and appearing on stage. At 8.30am, James is in his MINDfit class, discovering more about
developing mindfulness, building on his character strengths, and enabling a growth mindset. Mirroring the healthy mind, healthy body approach, James pulls on his House sports jersey for a fast game of Rippa Rugby in his Physical Education class, weaving his way across the sportsfield. Needing an energy boost, James retrieves his morning tea from his backpack before heading into the Chapel for congregational singing – more commonly known as ‘Congers’.
