Ammonia loss is a localized reaction
Urea granules are hygroscopic (absorb moisture from the air) Once applied, urea starts to move into the soil Urease enzymes start the hydrolysis process releasing ammonium (alkaline) This temporarily raises the pH of the soil around the granule This increase in pH leads to ammonia volatilisation
