PAGE 11 May 2022 Showdown Rescheduled The Sand Mountain Showdown softball game between the University of Alabama and Jacksonville State has been rescheduled for Wednesday, October 12, 2022. The event was originally scheduled for this Spring, but was postponed due to weather condition. JSU Spring Graduates A 41 Jacksonville State student athletes received their degrees during JSU's Spring commencement ceremony at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The May 6 ceremonies total of saw Gamecocks earn 36 bachelor's degrees along with five master's degrees. Overall, 15 of JSU's athletic programs featured at least one graduate in the spring class. JSU's football team had the most spring graduates with six student-athletes receiving their degrees, followed by five members of the Gamecock baseball team and five more across JSU's track and field team. The Crimson Tide took silver in the First and Second Varsity 4+ races and bronze in the First, Second and Third Varsity 8+, earning 73 points towards a second-place team finish. Alabama has finished second in each of the last three years. Four members of the Tide’s First Varsity 8+ boat earned All-Big 12 accolades: Darcy Jennings, Ella Kemna, Claudia Mecchia and Gianna Rucki. The Crimson Tide now awaits the NCAA Division I Rowing Selection Show with qualifying teams racing in the NCAA Championships May 27-29 in Sarasota, FL. “We saw some of our best performances of the year," said Alabama Coach Glenn Putyrae. A volleyball prospect camp for sophomore, junior and senior girls will be from 9 a.m. to noon July 27. This skills camp is for those interested in playing at the college level and is limited to the first 50 who register. The registration fee is $60 per camper. A volleyball team play date will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 28 for varsity players. Registration fee is $100 per team. For play dates scheduling purposes and the prospect camp, participants must contact Courtney Brothers, Cardinals volleyball coach and camp director, at cbrothers@ gadsdenstate.edu by July 1 to register. A cross country clinic for boys and girls in seventh through 12th grades will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 20. This camp includes speakers who will discuss flexibility, strength, skills training, goal setting and nutrition. Coaches may attend free of charge but must register. Lunch will be provided for all attendees. Free t-shirts will be given to those taking advantage of the early bird special, which is $35 per person. Registration must be completed and payment received by June 1. Registration cost after June 1 is $40 per person. The deadline to register for the clinic is July 1. Tennessee Names New Women's Soccer Coach Joe Kirt, a mainstay on the Tennessee sidelines since 2007, has been named UT's women's soccer head coach, as announced by Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Danny White. During his 15 seasons on Rocky Top, Kirt has helped guide the Lady Vols to two SEC Tournament championships, two SEC Eastern Division championships and seven NCAA Tournament appearances. As an assistant coach at Tennessee, Kirt's primary role was in training goalkeepers and implementing defensive strategy. The program logged 18 shutouts over the last two seasons. Alabama Rowing Finishes 2nd at Big 12 Championships Summer Youth Athletic Camp at GSCC The Gadsden State Cardinals Athletic Department will host summer basketball, cross country and volleyball camps for students in first grade through high school. “Gadsden State has sponsored summer youth enrichment activities for more than 20 years and it’s good to be able to provide this opportunity for our local athletes,” said Dr. Kathy Murphy, Gadsden State president. “With the return of our baseball and softball programs, we hope to be able to offer camps for those sports as well in the near future.” A basketball team camp for varsity and junior varsity boys will be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 6. Youth basketball skills camps for boys and girls in first through eighth grades will be from 8 a.m. to noon June 20- 21 and June 27-28. Twelve teams from the Southeastern Conference, including both Auburn and Alabama, have been selected to compete in the 2022 NCAA Division I Softball Championship. The SEC earned five national seeds, including two of the top six. Arkansas (44-9), the 2022 SEC Regular-Season and Tournament Champion, earned the No. 4 seed, which is the highest in school history The Razorbacks will play Princeton at 5 p.m. on May 20. Alabama (41-11) was awarded the No. 6 seed and will host the event. NCAA Regional action at Rhoads Stadium begins Friday, May 20 at 3 p.m. CT on the SEC Network with Alabama (41-11) facing Chattanooga (29-25), followed by Stanford (36-19) and Murray State (40-16-1) at 5:30 p.m. CT. Tickets will be available starting Monday, May 16 at 9 a.m. through the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262) and via www.RollTide.com/tickets. Tennessee (39-16) was tabbed the No. 11 seed. Florida (43-16) was tabbed the No. 14 seed, and Missouri (36-20) garnered the No. 15 seed. Auburn (39-15) earned a spot in the Clemson Regional. The Tigers are Postseason bound for the 17th time in program history. Auburn will face No. 25 Louisiana (45-11) on Friday, May 20. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m. CT on ESPN+. The Ragin’ Cajuns are coming off the program's third consecutive Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship. Georgia (40-16) will play in the Durham Regional. No. 12 Duke, Liberty and UMBC will also be in the Durham Regional which is set to begin Friday, May 20. Georgia and Liberty will face off Friday at 12 p.m., ET, on ESPNU. Kentucky (35-17) is slated to compete in the Blacksburg Regional, while LSU (34- 21) will be a part of the Tempe Regional. Ole Miss (39-17) is headed to the Los Angeles Regional, and Mississippi State (33-24) is set to compete at the Tallahassee Regional. Texas A&M (29-26) was selected to play at the Norman Regional. Regionals will be held May 20-22 on 16 campus sites. At each campus site, a four- team, double-elimination tournament will be conducted, and the 16 winning teams advance to the super regionals. Super regionals for the championship will be held May 26-29 on eight campus sites. At each site, two teams play in a best-of-three tournament format. The winners from each super regional advance to the NCAA® Women’s College World Series (WCWS) from June 2-9/10 at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City, Since 1997, the SEC has had nine teams advance to the Women’s College World Series: Alabama (2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021), Auburn (2015, 2016), Florida (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019), Georgia (2009, 2010, 2016, 2018, 2021), Kentucky (2014), LSU (2001, 2004, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017), South Carolina (2007), Tennessee (2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015) and Texas A&M (2017). Thirteen schools have been crowned the NCAA Division I softball champion since the tournament started in 1982, with two SEC schools among the winners on that list. Alabama claimed the first national championship in SEC history when it downed Oklahoma, 5-4, on June 7, 2012. Florida defeated Alabama in the best-of-three series in 2014 and then became the third program in NCAA softball history to win back-to-back national titles after defeating Michigan in the 2015 WCWS Championship Series.
