Welcome to Global Chic Lifestyle ~ Celebrate
From two to two hundred or more the gathering together of people often includes food, drink, conversation, and music. Holidays celebrated across the globe, family gatherings commemorating a special event, or little known and obscure holidays, all are a reason to set a nice table, cook good food and create a memory. A recent trend includes a renewed interest in vintage dishware, crystal and silver. There are many facebook groups and websites dedicated to tablescape design. Pinterest showcases ideas for parties, but most often for well known holidays or celebrations. This publication highlights a few obscure less celebrated holidays. The purpose is to introduce new and interesting ways to celebrate. I have included a number of well known holidays but often a different take on the decor. Table design, a synopsis about the holiday, music playlist, clothing suggestion, a wonderful menu and recipes are included for each holiday. Two suggestions per month will give any host or hostess ideas for a gathering or even a solo dinner. Countries from around the world are celebrated . . . There is always a reason to Celebrate! Enjoy! Three Kings Day Three Kings day represents the day the Three Wise Men gave gifts to Jesus and signifies the end of the Christmas celebrations. The holiday is mostly celebrated by Catholics in Europe, Latin America and Spain. Often called the Epiphany, meaning to reveal, the holiday refers to when Jesus was revealed to the world. Families often celebrate with special meals, Kings Cake and children may leave their shoes out the evening before and receive gifts or special treats in their shoes. Elaborate processions are a part of the celebrations on the eve of Three Kings Day, especially in Barcelona, where the kings arrive by ship from far away eastern countries.

Spaghetti day January 4 has long been celebrated as National Spaghetti Day, although the exact origin or the holiday seems to be in question. Americans have always favored this thin, cylindrical shaped pasta of Italian and Sicilian origin. A variety of sauces top the pasta~ carbonara, bolognese, alfredo, clam sauce, marinara and others. Meatballs are often added as well as hard grated cheese such as Romano, Parmesan, and Grana Padano. Spaghetti is often an American’s first introduction to Italian pasta. Given current eating trends there are a variety of gluten free pastas as well as Zoodles, made from zucchini. Pasta has been enjoyed for centuries and according to records dried pasta became popular in the 14th and 15th centuries due to its ease of storage. Fresh, dried, homemade or not , be sure to enjoy a pasta dish and celebrate another interesting holiday on January 4th... Trivia Day!

Carnevale According to legend the people of Venice gathered and danced in the streets to celebrate a military victory in 1162. Current day celebrations include ornate costumes and masks, gondola parades, glamorous balls and concerts. It typically lasts about two weeks and ends on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Carnevale literally means “remove meat”. It refers to the beginning of Lent when Christians often fast from meat and other foods. Masks were worn in the 13th century when Venetians concealed their identity and the only time when the classes mingled and celebrated together. While Venice is always a beautiful city to visit, there is nothing more magical than visiting during this unique celebration. As the weather is cold, there is often a misty fog that overtakes the whole city and it’s beautiful canals adding to the etheral mood.

February Almond Blossom festival
The beauty of the pink and white almond blossoms are celebrated in mid February when they are in full bloom across the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Locals and tourists gather to taste the year’s crops and listen to traditional music. Tafraoute is the largest producer of almonds in Morocco and where the annual festival is held. The event is held inside an old Roman ruins and the scene creates a calming atmosphere and is staged and beautifully lit for performances throughout the day and evening. When the almond blossoms are in full bloom it is common for beekeepers to bring their hives into the orchards to help pollinate the crop.

St. Patricks Day
Both a religious and cultural holiday the feast of St. Patrick is celebrated globally and it is often said on that day everyone is Irish. The saint was born in the 4th century and legend has it that he often used the shamrock to explain the trinity to the Irish people that he was converting to Christianity. A largely secular holiday now, it is associated with the drinking of beer, often green, and the wearing of green clothing. The holiday is sometimes celebrated with parades , but more often by going to a pub, drinking beer or Irish Whiskey, eating Irish food and listening to typical Irish music.

mardi gras Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras in French is the last hoorah for many Christians who celebrate Lent. The name makes reference to the last day that many people eat meat or fatty foods before giving them up until Easter. Mardi Gras typically lasts a few weeks while Fat Tuesday is the biggest day of celebrating as it is the day before Ash Wednesday. Cities across the globe celebrate with parties, parades, floats, costumed revelers, and of course, the famous Polish dessert paczki. New Orleans is well known for it’s elaborate celebrations, parades, and beads that are thrown from the floats, usually in the colors of purple, green and gold. Masks with glitter and feathers in those colors can be seen throught the city. Many cities across the globe have huge celebrations during this time... a few of the most famous besides New Orleans are Rio de Janeiro and Venice, however celebrations can be found in numerous cities, each with their own flavor and traditions.

April semana santa, Guatemala Semana Santa (Holy Week) is a week long elaborate celebration and a mix of Spanish tradition and indigenous cultural beliefs. Spainards introduced the celebration almost 500 years ago. Processions of Christian men in purple robes carry lavish floats, waving containers of burning incense while the band plays a deep, booming, rhythmic song. Another float depicts the mourning Virgin Mary and is carried by women wearing black. The streets of the parade route have been adorned earlier in the day with ‘carpets’ that are made from colored sawdust, dried flowers, palm leaves and an array of natural materials. Stencils are used to created intricate designs and as the parade moves down the street, the designs are destroyed, then swept up when the parade is over. The carpets signify that neither life nor death are permanent. While only enjoyed for a short time preparation for an ‘alfombra’ often starts months earlier. Holy Week culminates on Easter Sunday with festivities that include children waving colored flags, confetti being thrown and fireworks in the evening.

May
May Day In France, the tradition of giving Lily of the Valley bouquets to loved ones goes back to 1561 when King Charles IX was given a present of these flowers. Europeans and Americans celebrate the holiday with crowns of flowers, maypole dancing, and making flower baskets. The holiday also celebrates spring, fertility and feminity. May Day celebrations are twofold as it is often the day known as International Labor Day, however the US has it’s own celebration of workers so is not usually designated as such in the US.

World Dracula Day Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula was released on May 26, 1897 and the Whitby Dracula Society created the holiday to celebrate this day in 2012. A relatively new holiday there are no long held traditions, but the story of Dracula is well known and a themed party is the most often type of celebration. Costumes, Dracula inspired foods, spooky music and possibly a film to complete the evening. A synopsis of the novel has a solicitor traveling to Bran Castle in Transylvania where he discovers Dracula, a vampire. He escapes and the Count moves to the seaside town of Whitby in England where he plagues the town. In the end he is hunted down and killed. Although there is still controversy surrounding the actual inspiration for the novel, there are many places claiming to be part of the history. The name Dracula actually means the devil, in Romanian. Dracula is one of the most famous pieces of English literature.

June
Juneteenth On June 19, 1865, almost two months after general Robert E. Lee , the Confederate General, surrendered at Appomattox, Va., Gordon Granger, a Union general, went to Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African Americans that the Civil War had ended and they were free.General Granger’s announcement put into effect the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued nearly two and a half years earlier, on Jan. 1, 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln. Recently declared a National Holiday Juneteenth is becoming more widely celebrated in the US. Typical Juneteenth celebrations can range from picnics with typical bbq foods or celebrations of the heritage of many African Americans. The South Africa braai, is a BBQ that is a very serious ritual. It’s a national sport of sorts, seen everyday all over this country. It’s usually done over coals and wood, however we have adapted to gas in the US.

June World Milk Day
World Milk Day was established by the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization to celebrate contributions of the milk and dairy sector to the world. A rich source of calcium, milk is an integral part of our lives. Presently milk comes from not just cows or other mammals, but sources including almonds, soy and coconut. The dairy industry contributes to wellness but also provides livelihood for milllions. Each year a theme is chosen and for 2022 WMD is bringing attention to climate change. The choice of a black and white theme for the tablescape was inspired by napkins found at a home store. A visit to a thrift store and a matching scarf was found and it serves as a table runner. Simple foods reminiscent of a malt shoppe from decades past this menu incorporate plenty of milk and cheese!

Basic white chargers, tablecloth, napkin rings, candles and serving dishes are the base for this red, white and blue theme. Square plates layered on the diagonal add a dynamic look to the table. Sleek red wine glasses and stars and stripes coffee cups are the only flag themed decor, yet the table is obviously a patriotic theme.

Women and girls tend to cherish their friendships and a day to spend time together, laughing, sharing stories and food and drink is a perfect time to celebrate. Not an official holiday where people get off work this unofficial holiday appears to have grown organically. Share some time with those females in your life who are part of your tribe.

September
wine tasting
September is wine harvest month in the United States and Europe. Plan a trip, long weekend or a pilgrimage to your favorite winery, you won’t regret it. An alternate event would be to plan a get together with friends and family. Time to celebrate with a casual outdoor dinner enjoying the last days of summer. Select different varietals of wine and celebrate with a tasting party. A french themed menu will pair nicely with some of the finest wines in the world, or add a few local varieities to add to your reportoire. Visit a farmers market for fresh vegetables for a charcuterie board and the last of the summer crop of Heirloom tomates.

Simple foods will not interfere with wine tasting and pairing your favorites with dinner, while adding some new.

A pair of warm Haflinger wool shoes and the outfit is complete.
