Oktoberfest Germany An annual festival held over a two week period in Munich Germany originated in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria, who later became King Louis I. In the German tradition the focus of Oktoberfest is eating, cavorting, drinking and singing. Tradition, atmosphere and family fun make this event a special time of year for Germans. . Enjoying a stein of Bavarian lager along with a grilled brat while listening to a traditional German polka is the epitome of a great time at the festival. Some people dress in traditional Bavarian clothing : a dirndl for women and lederhosen for men. While fun, it is not necessary. However, should the band start to play the ‘chicken dance’ joining in should be mandatory!
