Carnevale According to legend the people of Venice gathered and danced in the streets to celebrate a military victory in 1162. Current day celebrations include ornate costumes and masks, gondola parades, glamorous balls and concerts. It typically lasts about two weeks and ends on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Carnevale literally means “remove meat”. It refers to the beginning of Lent when Christians often fast from meat and other foods. Masks were worn in the 13th century when Venetians concealed their identity and the only time when the classes mingled and celebrated together. While Venice is always a beautiful city to visit, there is nothing more magical than visiting during this unique celebration. As the weather is cold, there is often a misty fog that overtakes the whole city and it’s beautiful canals adding to the etheral mood.
