mardi gras Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras in French is the last hoorah for many Christians who celebrate Lent. The name makes reference to the last day that many people eat meat or fatty foods before giving them up until Easter. Mardi Gras typically lasts a few weeks while Fat Tuesday is the biggest day of celebrating as it is the day before Ash Wednesday. Cities across the globe celebrate with parties, parades, floats, costumed revelers, and of course, the famous Polish dessert paczki. New Orleans is well known for it’s elaborate celebrations, parades, and beads that are thrown from the floats, usually in the colors of purple, green and gold. Masks with glitter and feathers in those colors can be seen throught the city. Many cities across the globe have huge celebrations during this time... a few of the most famous besides New Orleans are Rio de Janeiro and Venice, however celebrations can be found in numerous cities, each with their own flavor and traditions.
