Nominations called for memorial award

The award was created in 2015 inmemory of Jean-Paul St-Pierre, who served on Rus- sell Township council both as councillor and as mayor and also, during his time as mayor, served a one-year termas warden of the United Counties. During that time, he also sat as chairman of the Eastern Ontario Wardens Caucus. St-Pierre also served his home community as a trustee for the Village of Russell Police Board. “Jean-Paul was aman loved by all,” stated Guy Desjardins, mayor of the City of Clar- ence-Rockland and current UCPR warden. “He was inclusive, attentive, and energetic. Through his actions and his presence, he touched the hearts and lives of the residents of Prescott and Russell. Nominations for the award are open for any UCPR resident who has made a sig- nificant contribution to the community. Last year’s recipient of the inaugural award was Charles Leduc, an Alfred entrepreneur of long standing and the first francophone chairman of the Ontario Plowmen’s Associa- tion during its 104-year history. Self-nominations, nominations by a family member, and posthumous nominations are not accepted. The deadline for nominations this year is Oct. 31.

St-Pierre Award celebrates the exceptional contributions of its nominees to the community and civic life of the Prescott- Russell region, through their endeavours in the fields of art, culture, business, pro- fessional work, charitable and community works, health, education, public service, media and communications, sports, agri- culture, the environment, and other areas. The sole unifying factor is that whatever the recipient’s achievements are, they have made some lasting contribution to the well- being of other UCPR residents.
The community service legacy of one of Prescott-Russell’s most beloved mayors lives in the annual award bearing his name. The call for nominations has begun for the J.P. St-Pierre Award. La fourgonnette et les 693 kilogrammes de tabac haché fin ont été saisis. Une patrouille a été bien profitable pour le GTRC, le 7 août dernier, alors que l’obser- vation et l’arraisonnement d’un camion Ford F-250 2015, auquel étaient attachées une remorque et une embarcation (à flotteurs), a engendré la saisie de 400 sacs de plastique transparents contenant du tabac haché fin, qui pesaient 878 kilogrammes et 12 sacs de plastique contenant 4 kilogrammes de tabac à la saveur de cerise, pour pipe, ont été trouvés dissimulés dans l’embarcation. Contrairement à la précédente arrestation, cette fois, la police a pu divulguer l’identité des individus arrêtés. Il s’agit de Donat Beaupré, 55 ans, de Les Coteaux, Québec, et Erickson Beaupré-Pré- val, 23 ans, de Montréal Nord, Québec. Ils ont été accusés de possession de tabac haché fin en vertu des dispositions de la Loi de 2001 sur l’accise. Les deux hommes font également face à des accusations en vertu de la Loi de l’impôt sur le tabac provincial, pour possession de cigarettes nonmarquées. Erickson Beaupré- Préval doit comparaître devant la Cour pro- vinciale de Cornwall, le 27 septembre 2016. Donat Beaupré doit comparaître devant la Cour le 12 octobre 2016, à Alexandria, Ontario.
Après avoir procédé à la saisie de près de deux tonnes de tabac de contrebande au cours des dernières semaines, le Groupe de travail régional de Cornwall (GTRC) a de nouveau effectué une autre importante saisie. Le travail de surveillance de la frontière par le GTRC s’est encore une fois avéré des plus efficaces « Et nous continuerons de maintenir une forte présence le long de nos frontières afin de rendre nos communautés plus sécuritaires », a déclaré l’inspecteur Paul Mellon, commandant par intérim du district du Nord-Est de l’Ontario. Surveillance efficace Tout a commencé le 4 août dernier, alors que la GTRC effectuait une surveillance sur le fleuve Saint-Laurent près de la frontière entre l’Ontario et le Québec. Les policiers ont repéré une embarcation en provenance de la région de Lancaster qui naviguait vers l’est et qui a accosté près de Rivière-Beaudette, au Québec. Deux occu- pants de l’embarcation ont été vus déchar- geant sur la plage ce qu’on soupçonnait être des sacs à ordures contenant du tabac haché fin. « Par la suite, deux autres individus ont été vus chargeant les sacs à ordures dans une fourgonnette Oldsmobile Silhouette 2000. Les policiers sur place ont pu arrêter les individus qui avaient été vus en train de
