The Art of Reading Summer 2025

The Art of Reading Turning Pages and Building Community with the Arthur Public Library District QUARTERLY NEWS Vol 1 Edition 2 Summer 2025

Stop the Summer Slide: As summer rolls in, students often take a well-deserved break from school, but too much time away from learning can lead to the “summer slide,” aka a loss of academic skills over the break. Arthur Public Library is here to help with a fun, free, and educational solution: Summer Reading Club! This year’s theme, Color Our World, invites kids to explore a world of books by reading for 20 minutes a day. By reading daily, children build

vocabulary, improve comprehension, and maintain literacy skills- all while enjoying exciting, age- appropriate stories and activities. Our Summer Reading Club isn’t just about books though—it’s also about connection. With interactive programs, and creative crafts, kids can socialize and develop confidence in a relaxed, welcoming space. The Summer Reading Club is free for all children who have completed grades

Kindergarten - 5th. So, whether your child is just beginning to read or already devouring chapter books, they’ll find engaging activities, chances to earn prizes, and opportunities to connect with others in the community through books and events. Join us and help your child color their world with knowledge, imagination, and fun this summer!

Warmly, Kelsey Pruitt Library Director

Dawn ’ s Diary

Dear Diary, I attended a talk from Becca Dickens’ from Regenerative Life Farms

at the Arthur Public Library and heard her speak about good gardening practices.

She said dandelions will grow where the soil is bad, who knew!? Those dandelions actually put calcium into the soil, so when we look out into the yard and see those yellow blooms, don't get upset, they are helping your soil. She also talked about the underground communication network between trees and other plants and when they are being attacked by insects or disease it transmits signals underground to similar plants to warn them of the danger. They will give up their life to save the other plants. Garden bugs will be found on the weakest plants in your garden. If you are lucky enough to have a toad in your garden they will eat the stink bugs that grow on your squash plants.

So that is why I've had a toad hanging out in my garden the last couple of years! To think of it, he has always been around my squash plants. Don't use any product that has "cide" in it such as pesticide or herbicide. We don't truly know if any of it leaches into our vegetables or if it even kills the plants. Illinois has the best soil and Moultrie and Douglas counties have some of the best soil in the country. Eat foods that only have 5 or less ingredients and you should be able to pronounce those ingredients for it to be considered a whole and healthiest of foods. Make friends with a farmer and find out how their crops or livestock is grown/raised. I can't wait to see what programs the library will have in the fall.I wonder what they will be,they are always interesting and free to the public. Until next time, Dawn

Trudy ’ s Tales & Tidings

What a fun journey we have been on together this school year for our Thursday afternoon story-time, “Tales and Tunes with Trudy”. We went from an average of 9 last year, to an average of 16 this year, regularly even having 20! It has been so precious to engage and get to know each and every child who attends. They really get inside your heart! It’s so rewarding to see them grow in their reading and attention skills and to see them bond together as a group. This year, we were really proud of how the children eagerly welcomed 3 boys (from 2 different families) who came to story time in search of meeting new friends. It really warms your heart when you see genuine

kindness on display and I’m always looking for ways to reward those acts with a “kindness certificate” to encourage and reinforce how important kindness is and what a difference it makes. That is an ongoing focus in our times together. We are taking a break for the summer to reboot and plan for next year with the theme looking to be “Travel the World Through Books.” Please feel free to come and “travel” with us next school year.

their reading interests. Engaging with them weekly is one of the joys of my job as I think we are an encouragement to one another. Connections with the young and connections with the old. Can’t get any better than that! Blessed to Be on Staff, Trudy Feyereisen Children’s Librarian & Outreach Coordinator The library is proud to offer a Home Delivery Service for individuals who have difficulty visiting the library in person and live within the Arthur Library service area. If you or someone you know would benefit from having library materials delivered directly to your door, we’re here to help!

Tuesday book delivery has also grown a bit lately, as I’m currently serving 9 patrons (but sadly have had to say more “earthly goodbyes” to some. Most recently was Jean Kistler, who had truly become a friend. She was such a lady and such a delight. Wally and I talk about her often as he’s still avidly reading amidst missing his sweetheart. I’m enjoying getting to know my newer patrons and finding out more about their lives and how best to serve
