A note for visitors in 2025: The Many Glacier Entrance will be closed for construction but if you get a hiking permit or have reservations at the hotel, restaurant, or on a boat ride, you’ll be able to go in. It might be much quieter than normal, which could be an added bonus. Waterton Lakes National Park My story wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Waterton Lakes National Park, which abuts Glacier National Park in Canada. The two parks joined hands across the border in 1932 to form Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. A short 63-mile drive from the Many Glacier Entrance and a small border crossing takes you there. We arrived at jaw-dropping views of the historic Prince of Wales Hotel perched on a bluff overlooking Upper Waterton Lake. At its feet lay a quaint village with lovely walking streets and access to dozens of hiking trails, plus camping on the shoreline and a historic boat tour that runs the length of the lake into Montana and back.

shores of glistening Swiftcurrent Lake, we couldn’t help but run down to the water’s edge to admire the hotel’s elegant lines beneath the sharp snowcapped mountain peaks behind it. Built in 1914 to 1915 as the showpiece of the Great Northern Railway’s lodges in these mountains, the hotel resembles a classic yet grand Swiss chalet.
