Jacob Isaacszoon van Swanenburg Infernal Scene with the Last Horseman of the Apocalypse , c. 1600 Oil on copper, 16 ⅛ × 19⅞ in.; 29¾ × 38⅝ in. framed

This is one of only a small number of known surviving works by an artist who predominantly painted scenes of hell and the underworld. It depicts a ghastly throng of demonic creatures alongside the final horseman of the apocalypse, Death, who carries a scythe and gallops upon a skeletal horse. Van Swanenburg’s characteristic use of chiaroscuro—strong contrast between light and dark—can also be seen in the work of his pupil Rembrandt, who he trained as an artist in his studio. —HJ
