Gerhard Richter Abstraktes Bild (857-5) , 1999 Oil on Alu Dibond, 21⅝ × 18⅞ in. Collection of Susan and Larry Marx

In this work, Richter applies thick daubs of paint to a carefully prepared ground before scraping them across the surface using a custom-made squeegee, fabricated from a length of flexible Perspex fitted with a wooden handle. The fluid, rippled surface is created by manipulating the paint when wet. Here, veils of red and muddied grey evoke spewing lava and clouds of ash. —HJ
