A recurring motif in Katz’s oeuvre is the open mouth in which the viewer occupies a position looking outward from behind the teeth. It is used as a framing device to suggest the point of view of both language and the gut, addressing the duality between sensual and intellectual consumption of information. In Eruption , the mouth is repeated to form a frame stacked in recession. Teeth become like theater seats, lips like curtain wings, and the central void a blank screen. The painting becomes a theatrical staging of a scream. —HJ
