Much of Gallagher’s work draws upon mythology, science fiction, and oceanography. In Glean , a tangle of distended, intestinal entrails swirls against a jet-black ground, their stylized forms conveying a sharp sense of movement. Four birds are embedded in the mass, each connected at the beak by sharp, golden lines. The visceral, bodily intensity of Gallagher’s composition is enhanced by its surface, achieved by applying and scratching away multiple layers of paint. —HJ
