Taking a digitally blurred photograph as her starting point, Mehretu builds up her canvases using screenprinting, sandpaper, an airbrush, and expressive brushstrokes in a labor-intensive process of layering and erasure. This work evokes an apocalyptic vision of the sun eclipsed by clouds of volcanic ash. Its title references the book of Revelation and the uneasy period of silence in heaven after the breaking of the seventh seal. âHJ
