Ellsworth Kelly Red Orange Relief , 2009 Oil on canvas, 79¾ × 45½ × 3 in. Private collection

Red Orange Relief is part of a body of two-panel paintings that combine what Kelly considered to be the stability of straight-edged angular forms with the dynamism of curves. While the two panels in its pared-down composition are mounted on top of each other, they do not fully align. In the context of the exhibition, the painting functions as a stylized eruption, an expression of displacement in the most economical of means. —HJ
