Lisa Yuskavage Walking the Dog , 2009 Oil on linen, 77 × 65 in. Courtesy the artist and David Zwirner Private Collection

Yuskavage is best known for fantastical, otherworldly landscapes populated by sexualized female figures. Here, the protagonist—based on a photograph by the artist of Kate Moss in beaded underwear—poses nonchalantly against the raging fire beyond. “In the midst of an apocalypse, you still gotta walk the dog,” the artist joked during a tour of her exhibition Wilderness at the Aspen Art Museum in February 2020. Weeks later, COVID-19 lockdown had made daily existence within the parameters of catastrophe a reality. —HJ
