Theatrical masks, belonging both to Tragedy and Comedy, are among the most widespread purely decorative elements in Pompeian painting. In this case, the fragment—a clear example of the perspective illusionism that characterizes the Fourth Style—preserves a tragic mask suspended by reddish bands against the background of a white wall. —AC
