Cathy Wilkes Untitled, 2011 Oil on canvas, 7 × 9⅞ in. Courtesy the artist and the Modern Institute/Toby Webster Ltd., Glasgow Collection of Susan and Larry Marx

Best known for complex sculptural installations of seemingly unconnected objects, Wilkes also produces abstract paintings that—despite their diminutive size—require much the same level of intensive labor. Each is worked upon, set aside, scraped clean, and then worked upon again, creating a richly layered surface built up over time. The anthropomorphic, headlike form at the center of this canvas sits against a background of sandy Pompeian red. —HJ
