In the early 1960s, Kusama began making soft sculptures. Taking everyday objects—including shoes, furniture, suitcases, and kitchen equipment—she covered them with hundreds of handsewn and stuffed fabric phalluses, transforming them into humorous, anthropomorphic, and profoundly fetishistic presences. Here, the shoes and their bulbous protrusions are patinated with dazzling silver. Grouped together en masse—in a way that evokes both a crowd and the different guises of one individual—they suggest the steps of a journey toward other realms. —HJ
