Yayoi Kusama Wind , 1981 Paint on fabric, foam, wood, and plastic necklace, 12⅝ × 23⅝ × 5⅛ in. Private collection

As a child, Kusama experienced disturbing hallucinations in which fields of dots multiplied and threatened to engulf her. In response to this psychological trauma, the dot motif has become a trademark of her practice, understood by the artist as a process of “self-obliteration.” Here, Kusama’s signature dots cover soft sculpture egg-shaped protrusions. Strangely suggestive of a nightmarish, inedible crate of food, the forms nestle and morph into one another, entrapped by bead-like strands. —HJ
