Alice Neel Untitled (Alice Neel and John Rothschild in the Bathroom) , 1935 Watercolor on paper, 11⅞ × 8⅞ in.; 19⅜ × 16⅛ in. framed Collection of Nancy Magoon

In contrast to her oil paintings, Neel’s watercolors embrace the rapid spontaneity and sketch-like quality of the medium to conjure more informal atmospheres. This work depicts the artist with John Rothschild—friend, supporter, and lover for a short time during 1935. It places the viewer in the position of voyeur encountering a postcoital scene rendered in stark and humbling honesty. —HJ
