Elizabeth Peyton Flowers & Actaeon October , 2007 Oil on linen over board, 12¼ × 9⅛ in. Collection of Gayle and Paul Stoffel

In this small painting, Peyton creates an intimate, devotional still life, combining a vase of flowers with a horned depiction of Actaeon, a hunter in Greek mythology who was transformed into a stag by Artemis as punishment for his transgressions, and a favorite subject in ancient works of Roman art. Best known for her portraiture, Peyton’s sensitive and fluid brushstrokes create a sense of otherworldliness that transcends the everyday. —HJ
