Managing Children’s Screen TIme

Did you know that most American children spend about 5 to 7 hours a day on screens? According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), here are the recommended screen times per age:

Under 18 Months Avoid use of screen media other than video- chatting. 18 to 24 Months If you choose to introduce media, opt for high- quality educational programming and watch it with your child. Limit to an hour or less per day. 2 to 5 Years Limit screen time to 1 hour per day. Parents should be encouraged to view programs with children and help explain to them anything they are watching. Join the Weekly Calm Challenge! Each week this light, no-pressure challenge invites you to explore a few of Calm’s key features—whether it’s a sleep story, a five- minute meditation, or setting a daily mindfulness reminder—and everyone who signs up for the Calm app and completes at least one weekly activity will be entered to win a $50 gift card . Tips for reducing kids’ amount of screen time include:

Employees at PulteGroup can take advantage of our Paid Parental Benefit , which provides two consecutive weeks of 100% paid time off to care for your newborn or newly adopted child. Employees receiving the enhanced maternity benefit are also eligible for this program after their post-recovery period. Need adoption or surrogacy support? Our assistance program reimburses approved agency fees, legal costs, and necessary medical expenses, all within defined limits. For details on eligibility, timelines, and how to request reimbursement, visit the Adoption & Surrogacy Reimbursement page on Sharepoint. Parental Leave & Family Building Support For more information about putting together your own Family Media Planner, please visit the American Academy of Pediatrics website at https://www.healthychildren.org/Englis h/media/Pages/default.aspx#planview.

Eat meals seated at a table and encourage conversation without the distraction of any forms of screens (television, personal devices, cell phones, etc.). Encourage activities that get your kids moving (e.g., bike riding, sports, chores or a game of tag). It?s recommended that children get at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Time spent in front of a screen is time that could be spent being active. Do not use screen time as a reward. Keep televisions, computers and mobile devices out of bedrooms to encourage better sleep hygiene practices. As a parent, set a good example for your kids by being aware of your own screen time. Use the American Academy of Pediatrics Family Media Planner, which can help calculate how much screen time a child should be limited to based on age. It can also help to establish screen-free times, screen-free zones and device curfews if desired.
