A LETTER FROM THE GM • DUNWOODY COUNTRY CLUB

Dear Members, Summer is here and we are gearing up for the Fourth of July. What a great way to celebrate with your family at the club, and enjoy the entertainment, food, and fellowship with your fellow members. This has been a tradition of Dunwoody Country Club for decades and I hope you will participate and enjoy the holiday with us. Your Club Communications and Events Director, Becca Teal, has the day perfectly planned, and I know you will have a great time. Quick update on the back of the house/kitchen of our C lub. The Georgia Department of Public Health has inspected our operations at DCC. I am happy to report that we have re-ceived A’s in all cooking environments. What a great thing for our operation and knowledge for you the member, to have peace of mind that our kitchens are clean and sani-tized. These are unplanned inspections and can happen at any time. Our culinary team prides itself on continued cleanliness to ensure the safest place to prepare your meal. We have also received great and encouraging feedback from you on the Food and Beverage program that has been implemented at DCC. We are committed to improvement and strive for excellence in everything we do. Please continue to submit feedback from your experiences as these comments allow us to adapt and improve in real time and our C lub will only get better. As you know, the C lub will begin running the Golf Shop on July 1. I would like to thank Mike Dausch, Director of Golf, for his experience in the operation and for helping us transition to a club-owned business. We anticipate the continued high quality and quantity of goods sold in the shop.

The good news is Mike is here with us through January to ensure there are no bumps in the road.

As I continue to meet and engage with the membership, there are a couple of themes that continue to come up.

1: How are we doing financially? We are in a great financial position and I continue to see the C lub being great stewards of your money. 2: How did the Food and Beverage operation transition so quickly? Having professionals in the correct positions and allowing them to do their jobs is what all great m anagers do to en-sure success. That is what we have done. 3: What does the future of DCC look like? I have great hope for the future of Dunwoody Country Club. We have an opportunity to compete with the finest clubs in Atlanta. With the leadership we have, and with the membership’s support, I know you will be proud to be a member of one of the finest clubs in Atlanta. Please continue to use the APP to deliver feedback directly to me. It is a great opportunity to quickly deliver your ex-periences at the C lub. Thank you to everyone who is using this tool. I hope you have seen quick responses to your comments.

Cheers!

David Ruddell, CCM General Manager

Birdies and Bogeys It’s summertime at DCC and the Golf Operation continues to stay heated up with activity in all areas. After an- other busy May & June there is less planned on the golf calendar but daily play and junior golf, we’ll certainly keep the operation busy. We hope you and your families took part in one of the many spring and early summer programs and events. Now it’s time to groove in that game for the summer and fall finish! Although the Golf Calendar takes a back seat to busy summer schedules, we do have the second annual Red, White, Blue, and U p to You Men’s event in July and The Club Championship in August. One of the most popular events of the summer, Junior Weekend, will also take place the first weekend in August. The Junior Club Championship will be held on Friday and Saturday, August 2nd & 3rd, and the Parent-Junior Tournament and the Awards Banquet will take place on Sunday, August 4th. We hope to see you at these events.

Red, White, and Blue and Up to You! Saturday, July 6th Welcome to the second annual Red, White, Blue, and up to you Men’s Event. We decided to make a change to the Men’s Tournament schedule last year and eliminated the 27-hole Fun n’ Sun Event. This will be a Red, White, and Blue event with a little strategic twist and will be fun for all. We will still traditionally flight this event so teams can sign up for the Gold, Blue, or White Flights. Each team of four will pre-determine who on the team will play from the Blue tee, White tee, and Red tee (we’ll use player’s green tee handicaps for strokes). The strategic twist is each team will decide which tee the fourth player will play from. Would you like more strokes or a shorter golf course? Up to you! The format will be two best balls of four, breakfast will be served at 7:45am, shotgun at 9:00am, and scoring and lunch will follow play. And don’t forget to wear your best red, white, and blue gear! Registration for this event is currently open. Grounds Maintenance Week The golf course will be closed Wednesday, July 10th through Wednesday, July 17th for our annual maintenance week. The Golf Shop and driving range will reopen on Tuesday, July 16th and the golf course will reopen on Thursday, July 18th. If you plan on playing away while the golf course and golf operation is closed, please pick up your golf bag no later than Tuesday, July 9th. THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Friday-Sunday, August 16th-18th The Club Championship is open to all members and their eligible immediate family. Ladies and eligible Family Members ages 14-22 must meet the three eligibility requirements (as stated in tournament play guidelines). Ladies and juniors, whether male or female, must play in Championship Flight A and play according to the rules set forth for that flight. Ladies and juniors will only be eligible to win gross prizes. FORMAT : Individual Stroke Play flighted by Handicap Indexes. Championship Flights will play 54 holes. Play- ers with a course handicap of 10 or less may choose to compete in Championship Flight A which will play 54 holes of stroke play from the Black Tees. Players with a course handicap of 15 or less may choose to compete in Championship Flight B which will play 54 holes of stroke play from the Gold Tees. All other players will be flighted by handicap index and play 36 holes of stroke play from the Blue Tees on Saturday and Sunday. Verticutting is “vertical mowing” that cuts the grass vertically and helps promote more upright growth. This is extremely important with Bermudagrass putting surfaces as it grows aggressively, es- pecially down slopes, if left unchecked. Therefore, uphill putts are even slower as you are putting “against the grain.” We try and in- corporate a light verticutting in conjunction with our topdressings during the Spring, Summer and Fall months to help give channels for the sand to work into. During our aerification closure we will be conducting a heavy verticut on the greens followed by a hollow tine aerification with half inch holes. The aerification will be the removal of a half inch hole that is backfilled with sand. This is also an important part of managing thatch levels and incorporating topdressing sand in Bermudgrass. The tees will receive our normal practice of verticutting, aerifica- tion, and a heavy topdressing while the fairways will be aerified in two directions. The roughs will be treated normally as we scalp those areas down slightly and allow the grass to tighten up. After a successful application last year, we will once again be using the Dryject service on our greens this summer. This process utiliz- es the water and pressure from our irrigation system to inject sand into the greens surface. We will be injecting the sand at a rate of 550 pounds per square foot which equates to almost one and half tons of sand injected on a normal size green. It is a much more efficient way of getting a large amount of sand into the soil profile, and the aftereffects are much less than a traditional aerification. You will see still sand holes, but they will be smaller and more elon- gated. The surface will be somewhat soft for the next 24 to 48 hours, but then it firms up substantially with all the added sand. So, our greens aerification will be completed at the beginning of our course closure and will be mostly healed by the time we com- plete the Dryject at the end of the closure. The combination of these two processes will allow us to incorporate a large amount of sand into the soil profile. A link to this process can be found here: https://youtu.be/hVZZVHJ--8k. As you can see below, we were able to move this date up from last year so that we will not need to close a second time in July like last year.

As we are in the middle of summer, we are also at the most im-portant time of year for maintenance and cultivation of the golf course. Bermud a grass is an aggressively stoloniferous C4 plant which means it grows laterally across the top of the ground with its peak growing conditions this time of the year when the sunlight is longest and ground temperature is the highest. Three practices that we focus on to help with the playability of the Bermudagrass and not let it get out of hand during these summer months are: topdressing, verticutting and aerification. Our plan for topdressing is approximately every two months in the winter, monthly during the spring and fall and twice monthly in the summer months. This corresponds to the normal growth rate of the grass, and this process needs to be completed when we are closed for efficiency. Therefore, we are limited to Mondays when there are no outings or outings early enough that our staff can fin-ish after their completion. This equates to about 10 to 12 topdress-ings for the calendar year based upon weather and availability. The sand serves multiple needs by filling imperfections in the greens left by ball marks and low areas. This helps keep the sur-face as smooth as possible which ultimately increases ball roll as a golf ball loses speed every time it moves up and down or left and right. The second sand benefit is by working into the turf canopy and diluting the thatch layer. Thatch is comprised of decaying leaves and stems that can become very soft and problematic if left unchecked. Bermudagrass is inherently an aggressive thatch pro-ducer. Therefore, to dilute this area and allow water and oxygen to move through to the root zone, you must keep sand incorporated into the area to keep channels open. The sand not only allows for air/water exchange, but it also helps give the surface a firmer base.

Our aerfication/Dryject schedule for July is: Greens: Heavy verticut/aerification

July 10th – 11th

Dryject

July 17th

Verticut/aerify/topdress

July 12th – 16th July 10th – 16th July 10th – 16th

COACH HUGO - WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE HERO AND THE COWARD? This is one of the famous quotes of Cus D’Amato who was one of the best boxing trainers of his era and the history. This idea was very inspirational for me growing up. The quote of Cus -“What’s the difference between the hero and the coward? There ain’t no difference. They both feel the same on the inside: they both fear dying and getting hurt. It’s what the hero does that makes him a hero. What the other person doesn’t do , makes him a coward.” It’s very normal to feel fear in your matches .... you feel butterflies in your stomach before the match and that is one of the reasons why we play tennis. There are two types of people who react to fear in the following way: a person with fear is frozen, without reaction, mobility, or analysis of what is happening on the court. The other person uses this fear, especially at important times as energy! Energy to run faster, to get air from where there is none, to fight more, to identify what it needs to survive , and achieve success in the end.

The question now is: Which of these people do you want to be?

COACH MIKE CONLON (DCC’S NEW PICKLEBALL DIRECTOR) - PICKLEBALL BACKSWING I’ve found that most pickleball players try to do too much when hitting the ball. The best way to remedy the situation is to have a more compact backswing. From the non-volley zone (NVZ), your paddle should almost always stay in front of your body. Practice keeping the paddle in front of you and see how your control improves. From the baseline keep the backswing low and near your hip, then accelerate through contact. You want to generally land the ball near your oppo- nent’s feet, shortening the backswing will allow you to accomplish that goal more often. Reach out to me with any further questions and I’ll be happy to help with your pickleball strokes COACH CARLOS – POACHING When you are attempting to poach you need to make sure you are in the front half of the service box. If you are in the back side of the service box near the service line, it makes it very hard to poach. You would need to take too many steps to try and cross the court to cut your opponent’s shot off. So remember, if you want to be aggressive at the net and make more moves you need to be in the front half of the service box.

COACH ADAM - VOLLEY WITH THE FEET! 90% of the power on a volley should come from the body weight moving through the shot. This means we don’t need to swing much- the racket should always stay out in front of the player’s field of vision. This is advantageous because if a ball comes quickly-as it does in many doubles situations- we are less likely to catch it late. The short motion is less of a “swing” and more of a “push” or “block.” This motion naturally lends itself not only to a shorter backswing, but to a shorter follow through as well, which allows us to bring the racket back to ready position more quickly. This way we can be ready for the next volley right away. The only downside is that it does take more effort to generate power with the body weight because we have to....you guessed it, volley with our feet! While it may require more effort, it is so worth it to make this change if you are lacking confidence at the net. This tip is what transformed my volleys, and in turn changed my whole mentality at the net from fearful to aggressive and dominant.

Thank you for your Service On May 1st, DCC lost a member of the tennis staff. David Jones passed away that day. It was a terrible and strange loss especially since we think of tennis staff members being in good health. Obviously, David was not. David left our staff and our club with a big hole to fill. He did so much for so many, especially behind the scenes. While he loved to be around people, he loved taking care of people and helping others more. Big-hearted people do this purely for the satisfaction they get from caring for others. That describes David. He served this club in so many ways that our membership and even his colleagues never knew, yet we all reaped the benefits from his care. He took pride in his work and wanted the best for all of us whether you were a colleague, customer, or especially a friend. He did not need credit for what he did for others. He did it because he enjoyed serving others. That is a quality sorely lacking in this world today. He worked with kids be- cause he was a kid at heart. As an Air Force veteran of 20 years, David truly loved serving his country and was proud of his military service. He once told me he was just as proud to serve the members of this club. We miss D.J.
