COACH HUGO - WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE HERO AND THE COWARD? This is one of the famous quotes of Cus D’Amato who was one of the best boxing trainers of his era and the history. This idea was very inspirational for me growing up. The quote of Cus -“What’s the difference between the hero and the coward? There ain’t no difference. They both feel the same on the inside: they both fear dying and getting hurt. It’s what the hero does that makes him a hero. What the other person doesn’t do , makes him a coward.” It’s very normal to feel fear in your matches .... you feel butterflies in your stomach before the match and that is one of the reasons why we play tennis. There are two types of people who react to fear in the following way: a person with fear is frozen, without reaction, mobility, or analysis of what is happening on the court. The other person uses this fear, especially at important times as energy! Energy to run faster, to get air from where there is none, to fight more, to identify what it needs to survive , and achieve success in the end.

The question now is: Which of these people do you want to be?

COACH MIKE CONLON (DCC’S NEW PICKLEBALL DIRECTOR) - PICKLEBALL BACKSWING I’ve found that most pickleball players try to do too much when hitting the ball. The best way to remedy the situation is to have a more compact backswing. From the non-volley zone (NVZ), your paddle should almost always stay in front of your body. Practice keeping the paddle in front of you and see how your control improves. From the baseline keep the backswing low and near your hip, then accelerate through contact. You want to generally land the ball near your oppo- nent’s feet, shortening the backswing will allow you to accomplish that goal more often. Reach out to me with any further questions and I’ll be happy to help with your pickleball strokes COACH CARLOS – POACHING When you are attempting to poach you need to make sure you are in the front half of the service box. If you are in the back side of the service box near the service line, it makes it very hard to poach. You would need to take too many steps to try and cross the court to cut your opponent’s shot off. So remember, if you want to be aggressive at the net and make more moves you need to be in the front half of the service box.
