The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation

With a mission of transforming lives and communities through literacy. Their tireless eorts focus on serving traditionally underserved children and families across greater Houston, par- ticularly those living in low-income communities and attending schools with low reading achievement levels.

Curiosity Cruiser: A Beacon of Learning

In 2018, the Foundation collaborated with the Ladies for Literacy Guild and Harris County Public Library to launch the Curiosity Cruiser mobile library initiative. Since then, this fleet of four mobile libraries has become a beacon of learning. Children partici- pate in high-quality STEM+Reading programs, exploring artificial intelli- gence, circuitry, robotics, and virtual reality—all right in their neighbor- hoods. As they board the Curiosity Cruiser, they select books to read and keep, enriching their lives and expanding the reach of the Harris County Public Library.

The impact of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation is tangible. Their My Home Library program has distributed over one million books to Houston children, thanks to generous donors. Research shows that this simple act—putting books in the hands of children—boosts reading achievement levels and fosters a culture of literacy.

My Home Library: Research under- scores the importance of children having access to books at home. The My Home Library program empow- ers the community to sponsor home libraries for underserved children, fostering a lifelong love of reading. Reading Roundup: Volunteers play a crucial role in inspiring young readers. Through this program, volunteers read to first- or second-grade classrooms one to two times each month throughout the school year. Raising a Reader: Recognizing that parents are a child’s first teachers, nurses at participating HCA Houston Healthcare hospitals provide infor- mation about health brain develop- ment and early learning and resources to help parents kickstart their newborn’s path to success. These vibrant spaces within branches of the Harris County and Houston Public Library systems serve families with children below age five. They oer age-appropriate resources to build emergent literacy skills. Family Place Libraries:

The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation continues to ignite a passion for reading, one child at a time, and their impact resonates throughout the community.

Assessing Success The Foundation’s success isn’t just about numbers; it’s about changing lives. They evaluate their impact based on access, reach, and student academic progress. For instance, the UH Cougar Tutor program, supported in part- nership with the UH Advanc- ing Community Engagement Services (ACES) Institute, assesses academic progress in reading through beginning, middle, and end-of-year assessments.

Since 1997

BEAR is the only 501(c)(3) organization working with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) and Harris County Resources for Children and Adults that offers unique programs – that provide not only the basic needs of children recently uprooted, but also supportive services that provide comfort, dignity, and celebration of successes that propel the child toward a successful future – for abused and neglected children.

BEAR’s work is indispensable to the community. By offering both material support and emotional reassurance, BEAR ensures that every child they reach feels valued and cared for. Whether they help one child or thousands, BEAR’s mission remains clear: to provide hope, dignity, and a sense of belonging to the children who need it most. BEAR steps in to provide them with a stuffed animal to hold, a warm blanket, or new clothing with tags, signaling that they are not forgotten and they matter.

BEAR offers core programs:

WAYS TO KEEP JOINTS HEALTHY

EXERCISE Regular physical activity helps maintain strength and flexibility. It can help reduce pain and improve function. Maintaining muscle strength allows the joints to move as they were intended and can decrease wear. Healthy low impact activities such as walking, swimming or yoga are excellent ways to stay in shape. DIET Healthy foods that are high in vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids as well as calcium can be very important for joint health. Foods such as salmon and mackerel are good sources of Omega fatty acids. Green leafy vegetables are also healthy for you. Another good way to ensure all vitamins and minerals is to take a multivitamin daily. IMPROVE YOUR POSTURE Good posture can help keep joints healthy. Stand and sit up straight to protect joints from your neck down to your knees. A walk can improve your posture, too. The faster you go, the harder your muscles work to keep you upright. GOOD SHOES Wear comfortable shoes with a wide toe box and well-padded soles. Avoid heels and choose little cushion. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT Your size and weight effects the amount of force moving across your joints. Every pound you lose takes four times as much pressure off your knees.

Cassidy’s journey began with a simple act of kindness. At the tender age of four, she was persistent in wanting to “do a photoshoot.” She had just received a beautiful lip gloss and felt beautiful and powerful, proudly displaying her natural hair. A chance encounter with a stranger and turned into a viral video, where Cassidy confidently declared, “Thank you, it’s an Afro.” The world took notice, and Cassidy became a symbol of Black pride and beauty. Her signature catchphrase, “Thank you, it’s an Afro,” resonated with people of color and the natural hair community worldwide. The Journey Begins Cassidy’s afro isn’t just a hairstyle; it’s a statement. Through her book, Cassidy invites readers to embrace their curls, kinks, and coils as works of art. She teaches us that affirmations or as she calls them, “AFFROMATIONS” and self-love lead to unshakable confidence. As we turn the pages, we discover the magic of celebrating who we are unapologetically. It is a reminder that we all are unique, and this both sets us apart and brings us beautifully together. The heart of the book Cassidy’s afro is a testament to resilience, heritage, and individuality. In a world that often imposes impossible beauty standards, Cassidy’s book reminds us that our uniqueness should be celebrated, not shunned. The Afro becomes a symbol of pride, a crown that speaks to the beauty God has woven into our very essence. The Afro as a Symbol In a world where diversity is our greatest strength, New York native Cassidy Bridges stands tall as a beacon of self-love and empowerment. Her book, "Thank You, It’s An Afro" , is more than just a delightful tale, it’s a celebration of identity, culture, and the beauty that resides within each of us.

By Cassidy Bridges & Gabrielle W. Bridges

The Family Bond

Writing "Thank You, It’s An Afro" wasn’t an easy path for Cassidy and her family. The ups and downs of the creative and business process brought them closer together. As they navigated the twists and turns, they discovered newfound strength and resilience.

10

They learned to dance in the rain and take the time to enjoy every moment. It gave them time to reflect and decide to bet on themselves and win together. The book and business became a shared endeavor a legacy that would touch hearts and heal souls.

Cassidy Bridges, the 7-year-old dynamo, didn’t stop at being an author. Her passion opened doors to a world of possibilities. She became a clothing designer, a motivational speaker, and continues to model and act. Her entrepreneurial spirit blossomed, proving that dreams know no bounds, limits, or age. Cassidy’s journey expanded horizons they never imagined, branching into multiple forms of media, a CRUELTY-FREE AND VEGAN ALL-NATURAL HAIR CARE LINE, music, global outreach, designing fashion collections, writing more books, and advocating for literacy and empowering kid entrepreneurs while leaving an indelible mark on everyone she encounters. Beyond the Book

What’s Next?

As we celebrate Cassidy’s book, let’s peek into the future. Here’s what’s on the horizon:

Capsule Dress Collection: Cassidy is designing a captivating capsule collection featuring her signature tutu dresses. Each stitch celebrates the beauty of afro-textured hair, intertwining with layers of tulle and dreams.

Confidence Seminars: Cassidy plans to host confidence seminars for other children, teaching them to embrace their uniqueness. These seminars will delve into the essence of self-worth, echoing Cassidy’s powerful words: “You are enough. You are beautiful. You matter. You are Curious, Conscientious, and Crowned."

Co-Journaling and Activity Book: Her second book will be an interactive adventure - a space where dreams, doodles, and discoveries collide. Readers will find their own voices, their own stories, and an Afro-hair care section.

Affromation Kits: Cassidy’s tiny treasures affirmation cards, hair accessories, and love notes will spread love far and wide. Self-love isn’t selfish; it’s revolutionary.

BEAUTY LIES IN OUR AUTHENTICITY. Cassidy Bridges and her book, "Thank You, It’s An Afro," remind us that

Let us celebrate our unique features, our heritage, and the divine artistry that makes us who we are. So, the next time you see an Afro, remember Cassidy’s words: “Thank you, it’s An Afro”— a declaration of selflove and a celebration of the extraordinary within us all.

Moving can be an exciting adventure for both you and your pets! While it may seem like a big change, there are many ways to make the tran- sition smooth and enjoyable for your furry friends. Here are some tips to help ensure a pos- itive experience for everyone involved. Moving Tips for Pet Owners One of the first steps in preparing for a move is to consult your vet. They can provide valuable advice tailored to your pet's needs. Ensure you have their records and any necessary medica- tions on hand. Additionally, your vet can recom- mend a trusted colleague in your new area, making it easier to continue your pet’s care without interruption. Speak to Your Vet Pets can be sensitive to the hustle and bustle of moving. To help them feel secure, keep them away from the main packing and moving areas. Setting up a quiet room for them with their favorite toys, a comfy bed, and some treats can create a sanctuary where they feel safe. Regu- larly check on them to provide reassurance. Create a Calm Packing Environment When it's time to head to your new home, have your pet travel with you. This familiarity can be incredibly comforting. Design a cozy space in your vehicle with their bed or blanket. Keep them secure and avoid letting them roam freely in the car to prevent any chance of them getting lost. This will help them feel safe and reduce anxiety. Travel Together

Upon arrival, spend quality time with your pet to help them adjust. Introduce them to their new environment gradually, allowing them to explore at their own pace. Show them areas where they can play and relax. Keeping familiar items like their bed, toys, and food dishes can provide comfort. Settling into Your New Home Make sure to address any legal requirements in your new area, such as pet licenses or breed-specific regulations. Staying informed will help you avoid any surprises and ensure a smooth transition. Legal and Safety Considerations Your pet can sense your emotions, so maintain- ing a calm and positive attitude will help them feel more at ease. The more relaxed you are, the more comfortable your pet will be during the move. Stay Calm and Positive Working with a moving company that under- stands the needs of pet owners can make a big difference. Connecticut's Finest Movers, for instance, have extensive experience in handling various moving situations, including those involving pets. Contact them to discuss how they can help make your move stress-free for you and your pet. Choose a Pet-Friendly Moving Company

To ensure a seamless and positive moving experience for both you and your furry companions, consider following these helpful tips.

Happy moving!
