The Lakes South Morang College - Issue 11

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter NAPLAN CHANGES

Families this week in Years 3,5,7 and 9 would have received an email outlining changes to NAPLAN testing for 2023. Student achievement in NAPLAN is reported using proficiency standards for each assessment area at each year level. New proficiency standards with 4 levels of achievement will replace the previous 10 - band structure and the old national minimum standard set in 2008. The standards are set at a challenging but reasonable expectation of what students know and can do at the time of testing. There are 4 proficiency levels:

The proficiency level descriptions describe some of the skills and understandings students can generally demonstrate at the time of testing. The aim of the descriptions is not to describe each individual student, but to provide a fair summary of typical skills and understandings for a student at the level. It is important to note that individual students may demonstrate different skills or understandings depending on which parts of the tests they performed more strongly in. Students whose results fall near the top of a proficiency level will be able to demonstrate more of the skills, or more complex understanding. Students whose results fall near the lower end of a level will be able to demonstrate fewer of the skills, or less complex understanding. For national reporting, 2023 will mark the start of a new time series , now that all students are online, the tests are adaptive, and are being held in March instead of May.

Exceeding : the student ’ s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.

Strong : the student ’ s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing. Developing : the student ’ s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing. Needs additional support : the student ’ s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes that are expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.

Results from 2023 onwards will not be directly comparable with results from 2008 to 2022.

NAPLAN SCALE—NEW IS NOT COMPARABLE TO OLD

Both scales go from 0 to 1000 (from Year 3 to Year 9) but that is where the similarity ends
