You’ve Been in an Accident … Now What? 4 Vital Steps to Take Following an Accident
A common question we often hear from our clients is what should you do after an automobile or truck accident?
Right after an accident occurs, it’s only natural to feel panicked and anxious. However, not to worry! Keep this newsletter in your glove box or somewhere secure to reference in the event that an accident ever does happen! It will guide you through the steps to take to ensure you don’t miss anything important! STEP 1: IS ANYONE INJURED? Check yourself, your passengers, and all other individuals involved in the accident for injuries. If anyone is seriously injured, call 911 right away, and if you aren’t able to, ask someone else to make the call. It’s important to keep in mind that in stressful situations, injuries may not present themselves right away. STEP 2: GET A POLICE REPORT AND TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS. If the police haven’t already been called, it’s important to call them right away so they can generate a report to document the event. Be sure to also take your own photos of the accident and all of the damage. STEP 3: COLLECT ALL DRIVERS’ AND WITNESSES’ INFORMATION. This information will also be present on the police report, but it won’t hurt to gather the other involved parties’ names, addresses, phone numbers, and driver’s license numbers as well as the vehicle information and location of the accident. Use your phone to take photos to make this process easier. STEP 4: NOTIFY YOUR INSURANCE / OPEN A CLAIM. When the police leave the scene, you will be left with a report number to pass along to your insurance company to initiate a claim. When you’re in a safe place to do so, call your insurance company and they will walk you through the steps. Here at the Law Offices of Elliot Kanter, we are prepared to assist you with your car accident claim. Give us a call today — we are happy to help!
