NEW HEIGHTS NEW MOUNTAIN, NEW MINDSET, NEW GOALS
New Year’s resolutions … win or bust? We’re here — we are more than halfway through 2023. We completed the first six months, and we are beginning a new six months. Now is the time that many examine their New Year’s resolutions and evaluate how far they have come. Were they a win or a bust for you? If things aren’t going as you’d hoped, we still have time to reset and tailor them to make sure we find success. This past January, one of my goals was to tackle Snow King Mountain in Jackson Hole, WY, the newest and most challenging of the five mountains available for the 2023 “29029” Challenge. It’s the 29,029-foot elevation in the fewest number of miles per lap — the ascent is short and steep, and it will take 19 climbs with breathtaking views of the Tetons to match the climb of Everest, and I’m ready for these new trails, challenges, terrains, and heights! As you read this, I’ll likely be on my way to accomplishing this monumental hike or have just completed the greatest hike I’ve tackled yet. Why did I opt for Snow King Mountain? Well, I’ve always been competitive by nature — I played football in high school, and I loved the thrill of the game combined with the challenge each opposing player presented. In
it’s fascinating and motivating to look in the mirror and see the positive and impactful changes! To prepare for this climb, I’ve been working with coaches who help me to focus on sound nutrition, the importance of hydration, and my breathing. I am zeroing in on my mindset, and I’m ready to take on this epic challenge alongside other like-minded advisors. I’m ready, more than ready. And, while I’m gearing up for my “29029” climb, I have the same confidence I have with each of my clients’ SMART retirement plans. It energizes me to see each of my clients climbing their own Mount Everest by reaching the retirement “summit” of their dreams. One of the greatest feelings in the world, just like crossing the finish line after my Everest climb, is seeing the confidence our clients have once their SMART plan is revealed and kicked into action. Just as my coaches are focused on helping me reach my goals in this climb, I’m motivated to help you to reach your Everest. While you may not literally be climbing an Everest, reaching your own “finish line” is certainly nothing short of simulating a climb from your working years till your retirement years; and, for that, I’m your coach — we’ve got this! So, let’s sit down and review your personal and professional goals for the remainder of 2023 and get some of those “resolutions” checked off your list. Together, we will win!
both my personal and professional life, I never shy away from a challenge or an opportunity to improve upon myself, and I thrive off of the opportunity to better myself with each challenge I meet. EXPERIENCE THE JOY OF GROUP TRAVEL The More the Merrier!
Now that most countries have returned to their pre-COVID-19 travel norms, taking a jaunt around the globe is a great way to take a much-needed break. But doing it alone can seem overwhelming, especially when it comes to planning the details of a trip. That’s why managed travel groups have become popular among middle-aged adults. And no matter which travel agency or website you book through, traveling with a group offers many benefits you can’t get if you go alone. Here are a few! Trip planning becomes stress-free. Traveling abroad can be exhilarating, but planning the details of your trip can be daunting. Flights, hotels, and local attractions all require research and individual reservations, so all the moving parts may be difficult to keep track of — and even more expensive. With managed group
tours, the price you pay for the trip includes all those pesky planning details. Local guides know their stuff. Taking a tour of the local attractions in any country can give visitors a deeper understanding and connection to the culture. However, if you don’t know where to find those local attractions, guiding yourself through a city or town might deprive you of insider knowledge or interesting details. With managed group travel, the tours are already arranged for you to enjoy, with local guides who know the best places to visit for an authentic experience. Some groups even employ scholars to travel with you to provide interesting lectures and tours. Group travel is an easy way to make new friends. When you meet with your travel group at your destination, you’ve automatically made a few new friends you’ll get to know over
the upcoming days. Meeting new people can be challenging in our normal lives due to our routines, but a managed travel group creates a close-knit environment where you spend enough time with people to bond,
laugh, and share a few stories. Set a budget, and stick to it.
Most travel companies charge an upfront price that encompasses all the expenses you’d typically spend during your trip, including flights, hotels, and activities. This means that when you shop for a group trip to book, you can decide how much you want to spend ahead of time. You never have to worry about going over budget and finding a surprise on your credit card bill.
WE WANT TO SAY THANKS! Because of You, We Are Able to Make a Difference
Our annual “29029” JaxPAL fundraiser is underway now through Monday, July 31, 2023! Mid-month, Adam will be tackling his next “29029” challenge at the newest mountain of the yearly epic event: Snow King Mountain in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Adam sets out on this strenuous mental and physical journey not only to reach new heights and achieve personal goals but also to benefit the children of JaxPAL at the Westside Center — and we’d never be able to do it without your help! Dating back to 2019, when we first started this fundraiser to coincide with Adam’s endurance hike, we have raised over $15,000. We thank each of you, our valued clients, for your generous donations and for helping to make a difference in the lives of these talented and incredible children. The funds raised have been used to purchase computers, outdoor equipment for sports and activities, educational materials and supplies, and other electronic equipment to benefit their education and help them continue learning, thriving, and growing! This year’s funds will be earmarked to purchase much-needed new computers that are necessary in order to keep up with the current educational software, plus additional school supplies and classroom materials. We want to THANK YOU for your continued support and for being a part of Adam’s big climb every year! Together, we can dream big and climb high!

FINANCIAL FREEDOM IS YOURS — GRASP IT BY THE HORNS
This month, we celebrate the Fourth of July. While many of us celebrate by a day off work with barbecues, parades, fireworks, and parties, let’s not forget the true meaning. This day commemorates the Declaration of Independence, the document the Founding Fathers wrote and signed that declared that the Thirteen Colonies were no longer subjected to the monarch of Britain, King George III, and were now united, free, and independent states.
A pretty amazing statement and risk they took and the reason we celebrate today! In addition to this freedom, on July 1, National Financial Freedom Day is observed. Although this day has already come and gone, it’s still an opportune time to raise awareness for and celebrate financial freedom. When you hear the term “financial freedom,” you may think of the relief of being debt free and not having a mortgage to pay or bills to worry about. Possibly it means having enough saved to retire comfortably. For everyone, the term likely means something a bit different, but one thing is the same — it refers to having enough of an income stream and savings to afford a desirable lifestyle without working. Some people can’t wait to retire and may make sacrifices here and there to retire
early. Others might retire and decide that they wish to return to work part time. Some opt to retire later in life and may work longer to create a larger savings bucket. Everyone is different — some want to travel more frequently than others, live in larger homes, or experience more expensive adventures. Everyone spends and saves differently, but across the board, financial freedom is a shared goal — whatever that looks like for each individual. Having the ability to afford all of life’s necessities along with supporting your own life’s goals is the great American dream. What does financial freedom look like for you? As you near, enter, and navigate retirement, how can we help you achieve, maintain, and sustain financial freedom and a life you are excited to celebrate every day? Let us know what we can do to help!

AN UNCONVENTIONAL ‘BACON’ OF HOPE The Story of the Danish Protest Pig
In the 19th century, Denmark and Prussia couldn’t agree on where to draw their border. Both countries refused to concede or couldn’t reach an agreement on which country would ultimately control Southern Jutland, which today is Germany’s northernmost state called Schleswig-Holstein. This refusal to compromise ultimately led to war, and in 1848, Denmark won control. However, their victory was short-lived, as roughly a decade later, the Second Schleswig War was underway. This time, though, Prussia was victorious. After their victory, the Prussian authorities slowly began to move into the peninsula, implementing new laws over the Danes living there. These new laws prohibited anything Danish, including all uses of the Danish flag. Needless to say, the Danes were not happy — especially the farmers. These Danish farmers knew they had to protest this oppressive Prussian government, but they couldn’t just publicly wave the Danish flag. So, they got crafty. Danish farmers began to crossbreed their
pigs to create a new breed, one that had the same markings as the Danish flag. These pigs were red in color, with one white vertical stripe and one white horizontal stripe. The farmers named their new pigs Protestschwein, or the Danish Protest Pig. This protest pig quickly became the mascot of Danish cultural independence, and their efforts didn’t go unnoticed by Prussian authorities. In 1881, a local Prussian police station sent communications back to the government in Berlin that farmers were breeding strange-looking pigs. However, while they could not prove that farmers were knowingly breeding the pigs to look like the Danish flag, “it was believed that the farmers were well aware of this and that this pig represented an affront to the Prussians,” according to records from the Red Holstein Breeders Association. Today, the Danish Protest Pig is recognized as its own breed but has a different name: the Husum Red Pied. And, the now-German state of Schleswig-Holstein supports the protection of this pig due to the cultural significance it offered its Danish ancestors so many years ago.
