Surf Jam 2023 With a healthy turnout and the largest swell in a month, the ocean provided a memorable action-packed day. By Tai Sunnland ➳ The annual Outrigger Canoe Club Surf Jam was blessed with a fresh 3-to 4-foot swell and breezy trade winds on the last Saturday of June. Notable standouts were Toa Pere and Jackson Bunch. Both surfers entered the Under-14, Boys 15-18, and Open Men's division. Toa took first place in both youth divisions and finished second in the Open Men's. Jackson finished second and third in the youth divisions. This year we also held the first Beach Services heat, and the beloved Sam Clemens took first place. The Canoe Surfers didn’t fail to entertain the beach spectators. The crews were sending it on the biggest sets of the contest. Jimmy Austin and his crew of two placed first, even after taking the biggest wipeout of the day. The beautiful wooden trophies were handcrafted by Peter Balding, Jr. and the shirts were designed by Clemens. Congratulations to all competitors. A big mahalo to the OCC Athletics, Beach Services, Food & Beverage, and Maintenance teams; member volunteers; water photographer Tommy Pierucki; and Pacific Ocean Patrol without whom this would not have been possible. ■
