General Manager’s Corner

ALOHA OCC ‘OHANA! There truly is no comparison to our summer days at the Club! Whether you're out making waves on the water or comfortably nestled under an umbrella with a good book, OCC offers the perfect summer retreat.

Beyond these, the website offers countless other gems—every issue of the Club’s magazines, from the Forecast to the Outrigger to Ama —the history of the Outrigger logo, and a collection of over 33,000 images of our friends and family over the years. With an incredible number of monthly views, the website serves as a reminder of our Club’s past and helps highlight the present. You could spend hours or even days engrossed in the content of this site and still find more to explore. OCC’s sports website constantly reminds us of our Club’s rich history, and we are fortunate to have such a comprehensive and well-maintained resource. Please join me in sharing our heartfelt gratitude to Marilyn Kali and the entire Historical Committee for their dedication and hard work in preserving our legacy. This site is really one of a kind, and I would strongly recommend that you spend some time visiting it!

I would suggest that the next time you’re reading under an umbrella or scrolling on your phone, you take some time and look up the outriggercanoeclubsports.com website. Impressive doesn’t even begin to describe this website! Curated by one of our esteemed Life Members, Marilyn Kali, this website offers a comprehensive view into every aspect of our

Club’s history, including; its Olympians, the Winged “O”, ODKF, canoe racing, various sports both on land and sea, archives, photos, and so much more. Fun fact from the website: Our Outrigger members have brought home a total of 37 Olympic medals (18 gold, 13 silver, and 6 bronze)? This incredible accomplishment exceeds that of many countries! It’s a testimony to the sheer talent, commitment, and relentless drive of these athletes, and the dedicated coaches who guided and believed in them. Many of these acclaimed athletes continue to call the Outrigger Canoe Club their home. Through more than 140 oral history interviews available on the site, you can hear first-hand accounts from members like John Cline Mann, Fred Hemmings, Elizabeth “Liz” Perry, and Tri Bourne, to name just a few. Our koa canoes—the Kakina, the Leilani, the Kaoloa, the Ka Mo‘i, and the Stephanie—carry not only us but also the heritage of our Club. The website features articles about their history, the evolution of fiberglass canoes, and the meaningful process of naming each canoe, all eloquently explained by our Life Member and Winged “O” Kawika Grant.

Mahalo,

Tyler Roukema, General Manager
