The Healthcare Heroes Against Impaired Driving

First and foremost, we want to say thank you, MADD, for everything you do to stop drunk driving from every angle. We can never get enough voices to raise awareness of impaired driving problems. The Not One More campaign is a joint effort of all 13 of the state's trauma centers and the Department of Transportation to address the pandemic of impaired driving. The Not One More campaign has healthcare providers, aka "Healthcare Heroes," delivering the message with credibility, authenticity, and passion about caring for patients. Some of us are mothers, victims, or victims' families, but we are also physicians and nurses in the trauma bay. We swallow the grief and stand by the patients who need life-saving care.

The healthcare heroes who see the behind the scene of car crashes make a unified voice against impaired driving.

"We must realize that one more drink, one more hit, one more shot can lead to one more crash, one more injury, one more death of friends, family, and loved ones in our society. It's just not worth it." – Kent M. Burgwardt, MD, the Chairman and Director of the Emergency Department at Trinity Health. The effort is a plea to the public to say "Not One More" to the drink or drug that prevents the person from driving in such a state and therefore prevent Not One More victims from appearing on our hospital doorstep to receive life-saving care. The sad part of these drunk driving horrific injuries and fatalities is that they are all preventable, and we know the solution. - Jonathan Gates, MD, the Chief of Trauma Surgery at Hartford Hospital. It's completely preventable, and we want to deliver that message to our society. The Healthcare Heroes AID has been attending MADD events with educational resources such as drunk goggles. We virtually visit high schools for driving education, specifically covering the topic of impaired driving, distracted driving, and drivers' condition. Please contact Joanne Kim, the program coordinator, if you need or want us to be at your event with our resources and educate your community.
