Employee loyalty more likely to be rewarded with cash and vouchers FIGURES RELEASED by XpertHR highlight that many businesses in the UK are now opting to reward long-serving staff with cash and vouchers, rather than offering company memorabilia. Two-thirds of organisations (66%) recognise employee longevity with a long-service award. Most organisations (42%) surveyed acknowledge an employee for their service after a period of five years, whilst 30% wait for ten years’ service. One in eight (13%), however, will wait 25 years before offering a long-service award. Only one of the organisations surveyed commenced their programme after one year. The most common awards are gift vouchers, worth an average of £100. Some other organisations, however, do provide physical awards at this milestone, such as flowers and champagne. There are a wide range of awards provided across organisations and the maximum payment provided by an employer surveyed was £5,000, given following a decade of loyalty from an employee. University of Salford introduces secure online portal THE UNIVERSITY of Salford has implemented a secure online portal which has automated the production and distribution of payroll documents. It is thought that the portal, Epay, is saving the payroll team almost one day of administration time per month, as they no longer need to print and seal payslips for more than 2,500 staff. Epay is a Datagraphic product, and supports the trend towards remote and hybrid working, both for the payroll team and the workforce more generally. The previous system became impractical when the pandemic struck, and employees began to work from home. The payroll team’s processes and output are now managed digitally and the reliance on office equipment – and paper – has disappeared.

One in four employees confirm they do not contribute to a pension plan ACCORDING TO a new survey by MHR International, approximately one in four employees have no pension plan in place. This news comes despite the requirement for employers to automatically enrol eligible employees on to a scheme. The research highlights that 58% of employees surveyed struggle to understand how pension schemes work and how they should contribute. Additionally, eight in ten employees confirmed that their employer does not provide external financial advice as a benefit, and so they are left to educate themselves.

Adapting to hybrid working MANY EMPLOYEES have had to adapt to hybrid or fully remote working during the pandemic, and payroll departments are no different. Selecta UK & Ireland has provided some tips on how to adjust to hybrid working: ● increase physical exercise ● make healthier nutrition choices ● ensure that you can disconnect from work, and have a good work/life balance ● get involved with corporate social responsibility activities.
