FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK andrea.miller@mysanibel.com Andrea Miller, Recreation Director

July is Park and Recreation Month and this year’s theme is, “Build Together, Play Together!” It is a reminder of the contributions of more than 160,000 full- time park and recreation professionals nationwide, who along with hundreds of thousands of part-time and seasonal workers and volunteers, that provide programs, maintain facilities, and create community connections all across our country’s parks and recreation facilities improving the lives of tens of millions of people.

Park and recreation programs are essential to community health and well-being, and help cultivate lifelong friendships, resiliency, memories and community bonds that last for decades. During Park and Recreation Month, we encourage you to visit our beautiful beaches, parks, shared use paths and recreational facilities across the island. Let’s unite and share the many reasons why local park and recreation agencies are truly places to build and play together.

Calling All Coaches — Get Involved and Make a Difference! We’re excited to get ready for another great season with City of Sanibel’s Storm Youth Basketball — but we can’t do it without you! We’re currently looking for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer coaches who want to make a positive impact on the lives of our community’s children.

As we prepare for the season, we’re putting together a volunteer coach workshop to make sure you’re equipped with all the knowledge and tools you need. This workshop will include training on concussive injury awareness and prevention, compression-only CPR, and automated external defibrillator (AED) use in case of emergency. All coaches will be expected to sign their code of conduct paperwork and complete background screenings. We’ll also be organizing special events and activities, determining who needs background checks, assigning event responsibilities, and looking for additional ways to get more people involved in our programs. Storm Youth Basketball Season Highlights: Our leagues are for children in grades K–8, with a special Tiny Tots division (ages 3–4) for our youngest players. We’re currently accepting sponsor applications from community members and businesses who wish to sponsor a team or contribute to this growing and rewarding community tradition. Financial assistance is available for families who may need help with registration fees. Awards are made on a sliding scale based on income — please submit a completed application if you wish to apply Staying Transparent and Collaborative: We’re proud to track and share monthly and annual data related to our recreation programs — from revenue and memberships to activity participation — to aid in continued delivery of high- caliber services for our community. Click here to view the most recent Park & Recreation Advisory Committee Reports. Thank you for your continued support and for making a difference in Sanibel’s community!

THE MAINTENANCE MINUTE

connor.russell@mysanibel.com Connor Russell, Facility & Operators Supervisor

We’re thrilled to share several exciting upgrades happening at the Sanibel Recreation Center to enhance your experience and support your wellness journey! New Gym Equipment We're continuing our fitness refresh! Older pieces of equipment are being replaced to match the modern additions we introduced last year. Whether you're strength training or getting in your cardio, you'll enjoy upgraded machines that are sleek, safe, and user-friendly.

Pelican Room Transformation The Pelican Room is getting a new look—and new purpose!

We’re installing specialized fitness flooring, making the space more functional for yoga classes, group fitness sessions, and special events. This upgrade supports a more comfortable and versatile environment for movement and mindfulness. Parking Lot Improvements We’re also improving accessibility and appearance outside the building. The parking lot is being repaved with new blacktop, updated bollards, and fresh landscaping for a safer, more welcoming entry. Additional Facility Improvements We will also be resurfacing the pool deck, recoating the gymnasium floor and resealing the floors in some of the restroom and locker room areas. Thank you for your patience during these enhancements —we can’t wait for you to experience the improvements! Stay tuned for more updates as these projects progress as well as our Maintenance Week Closure dates for the summer. We appreciate your patience and support as we continue enhancing the Sanibel Recreation Center.

EVENTS CONCH-ECTION

denise.dillon@mysanibel.com Denise Dillon, Marketing and Events Coordinator

Busy Spring/Summer Leads to 25/26 Planning It’s been a busy, rewarding, and truly community-oriented spring here at the Sanibel Recreation Center! Since April 1st, we’ve been delighted to bring our community together through a rich array of special events, programs, and initiatives — all designed to foster health, happiness, connection, and a strong sense of community.

We hosted Tuesday Talks featuring expert speakers who kept us engaged and informed, alongside health-focused visits from the On Spot Dermatology Bus, the 3D Mammography Bus, and Body Composition Screening by Lee Health — delivering convenient, lifesaving health services directly to our community. We recognized and celebrated our first responders during the 50+ Years of First Responders event, teamed up with The Sanibel School and the Florida Department of Transportation for a Bike Safety Day filled with education and activity, and kept our children water-safe through Pool Safety with Our H2O Heroes — a wonderful opportunity for children and families to learn together. As we move forward, we’re excited to share our plans for the 2025–2026 year. Our proposal requests for fitness and enrichment instructors are now open, and we’re busy designing a calendar filled with exciting, themed days and months, more health and mindful events, and even some activities for our four-legged friends — ensuring there’s something for everyone, two-legged or four-legged! Whether you’re looking to grow, connect, celebrate, or simply enjoy your community, the Sanibel Recreation Center is here for you. Thank you for making the Sanibel Recreation Center a place where everyone feels at home — a place where friendships flourish, healthy habits take root, and lifelong memories are made. We can’t wait to see you soon!

FROM THE LIFEGUARD CHAIR tayvia.ruvane@mysanibel.com Tayvia Wright, Aquatics Manager

Aquatics Department News: Water Safety Matters! May was National Water Safety Month, a critical time dedicated to educating our community about staying safe around water. Did you know drowning is silent and can happen in as little as 30 seconds? Alarmingly, nearly 70% of drownings occur during non-swim times, and 88% of child drownings happen with at least one adult present. To prevent such tragedies, our community is encouraged to adopt the NDPA's (National Drowning Prevention Alliance) 5 Layers of Protection:

Barriers and Alarms: Ensure pools have four-sided fencing with self-closing, self-latching gates, secure pool safety covers, and effective alarm systems. These measures prevent unsupervised access by children and unauthorized adults. Supervision: Constant, vigilant supervision by a capable adult, designated as a water watcher or a lifeguard, is crucial whenever children are near water. Water Competency: Everyone, children and adults alike should learn essential water safety skills. Swimming lessons significantly reduce the risk of drowning and aquatic injuries. Life Jackets: Properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets protect you unexpectedly, especially around open water. Always ensure they are tested and appropriately used. Emergency Preparation: Equip yourself with CPR training, including rescue breaths and basic water- rescue techniques. Keep a phone nearby and always be prepared to call 911 in an emergency. Remember, effective water safety involves all these layers working together. You never know which one might save a life. Visit National Drowning Prevention Alliance website for more information. Upcoming Aquatics Events: July 4th Community Event: Join us from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM for fun and water activities at the pool. July Swim Lessons: Multiple class days and times are available at the recreation center for all ages. Click HERE to register. SWAT Team Tryouts: Tuesday, August 26th, and Thursday, August 28th, from 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM, followed by a parents' meeting from 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM each day. Sign up for just one of these dates. Regular swim team practices resume in September. Fall Triathlon Training: Watch for more information to come on this program in the Fall. Water Aerobics Classes: Stay fit with sessions available Monday through Saturday. Check our weekly schedule for specific days and times. Hands-Only CPR Training:

Saturday, October 25th, 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM Saturday, December 6th, 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM Saturday, February 7th, 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM

HALL OF SPONSORS

The Hall of Sponsors at the Sanibel Recreation Center provides individuals, families, businesses, and non-profits with an opportunity to support our youth community while gaining exposure through advertising. For a one-year period, sponsors can purchase a sign that proudly displays their support for the Recreation Center. The full cost of each sign is directed into the Financial Assistance Program, helping to offset costs for eligible families so children can participate in City operated youth programs, athletic leagues, camps, and more. This long-standing program has a rich history of providing essential support to island families, ensuring that all youth has access to recreational opportunities regardless of financial circumstances.
