The Magnificent Seven #6 Railway Triangle

The Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company (GHURC) had some ambitious ideas for the future of the Railway Triangle. But sadly, things do not always go to plan. The triangle shaped area of scrubland and disused railway equipment was crying out to be re-developed. At the start of the century, it was in a very sorry state and a grim scene for passengers arriving at the gateway to Gloucester. Gloucester’s MP Richard Graham campaigned vigorously to get something done about the eyesore site. In 2006, GHURC appointed Donaldsons to undertake a feasibility study for creating a 20,000 all-seater community stadium on the land to be shared by Gloucester Rugby and Gloucester City FC, incorporating student accommodation and hotel and conference uses. A Gloucester Railway Triangle Masterplan was drawn up, but it soon hit the buffers. Gloucester Rugby decided to stay put and develop the club’s iconic Kingsholm stadium instead. Instead, the Triangle site was developed as a mixed retail and business park, anchored by a new 70,000 sq foot Morrisons store and petrol filling station, built by Gloucester- based Barnwood Group, with business units, restaurants including a drive-thru Costa Coffee, pub and a Rygor Mercedes-Benz dealership.
