Gloucester Renaissance: The Magnificent 7

GLOUCESTER RENAISSANCE

Laying the foundations for the re-birth of Gloucester

Gloucester City Council leader Cllr Paul James was a former board member of GHURC and recognises the important role it played in the city’s regeneration. “To a large degree the GHURC was the catalyst,” he said. “The St Oswalds development was the first major development to happen in Gloucester for a long time. It gave confidence to other investors that big schemes could go ahead in Gloucester after a long period in which nothing big had happened in the city.

“The Urban Regeneration Company certainly gave it focus and helped to build that investor confidence. It brought all the key players around the table. “I also think the public sector intervention in Gloucester’s regeneration has been critical, whether it be the bridge over the canal, the completion of the South West Bypass or the public realm works in the Docks. “I don’t think you would have got the same amount of private sector investment without that public sector support.”
