“GHURC did have significant dedicated resources. In the early days, you had to work hard to attract investment interest in the city. That is not so much the case now. “There is plenty of developer interest, but it is about making sure the schemes are viable, that they are good quality and that they are right for the city. So the nature of the work has changed.” He added: “People want to see the historic city centre regenerated to the same standard as the Docks and the Quays and I absolutely get that. They won’t feel that the job is anywhere near complete until that is done, particularly in respect of King’s Square.”

regeneration of King’s Quarter, led by the city council, will start this autumn King’s Square, the city centre’s largest public open space, is to become a focal point for people to meet, watch performances and enjoy the arts. “The Square will remain as a public space with events and activities and we have approved a budget of £5 million for that. The rest of King’s Quarter will include a replacement car park, business units, potentially offices, a hotel and the upper floors of King's House, the Chambers pub building will be a cultural entrepreneurs’ hub. A place where creative people will be working and that whole area will build on the growth of the cultural side of the city."
