Points to note u Your ceremony cannot go ahead unless the legal formalities have been completed. u Notice of marriage or civil partnership must be given in person by you and your partner. No-one can give notice on your behalf. You cannot give notice by post or by telephone. u You must give notice in the districts where you both live. You must get married or hold the civil partnership within twelve months of the date you give notice. You cannot give more than twelve months notice. u The fees for giving notice and for a marriage or civil partnership in a register office are set nationally. However, the fees for the attendance of registration staff at a marriage or civil partnership in approved premises (e.g. a hotel) are set by the local authority. We will give you details of current fees on request. u There can be no religious content in a civil marriage/partnership. u This guide gives general information only.
