NYC public schools face complex challenges—the ongoing rise in chronic absenteeism, widening gaps in students’ math and reading skills, and lack of resources to support multilingual learners— amid a background of deep uncertainty around federal policy and funding changes. At New Visions, in moments like this, we lean into what we’ve learned from decades of fostering steady gains in the number of students who graduate on time, well-prepared for their next steps. Seeing the results of our impactful programs makes us confident in our ability to continue to expand young people’s opportunities. Our job is to build on these wins, and make them the norm, rather than the exception, so that every student in every school can experience that same level of success. During the past year, we have deepened partnerships with city agencies like the Department of Homeless Services to better serve students and their families, supported educators and school leaders with innovative tools and curriculum, and expanded opportunities for young people to investigate careers. The past year’s highlights include:
Career Readiness: Over 600 students built skills and explored careers through our summer Career Academies in partnership with best-in- class employers. Career Resources: Our new Career Directory enables counselors and students to explore over 240 career training programs and resources in one user-friendly site.
Science Curriculum: As our Biology and Earth & Space Science became the #1 most selected science curricula in NYC , we trained teachers from more than 300 schools. Advanced Coursework: We notified 17,500 high school students of their eligibility for free courses through CUNY College Now, and streamlined their applications.
Scholarships: We granted $1.2 million to 175 students to pursue their college and career goals. Math Coaching: Expert New Visions coaches provided 2,110 hours of support for math teachers in 63 schools to help them successfully implement new curriculum.
Over 36 years, through many periods of rapid change, New Visions has consistently risen to meet the moment by providing responsive, effective solutions to challenges in public education. In our quest to provide every child–not just some children–with access to services they need to thrive, we’re now turning our attention to using technology to improve communication and coordination across agencies and nonprofits throughout NYC. Thank you for being part of our ongoing effort to meet the challenges of this moment and secure a stronger future for students and families.
